Has anyone had Gestational Diabetes and did not have to take blood tests daily?

Six years ago, I had Gestational Diabetes and my doctor had me change my diet and tested me once a week in a the office. I went on to have a 7lb 9oz baby girl who was just fine.
Now, I failed my glouse test with my third baby and the new doctor wants me to test 4 times a day. No information on diet or anything. I am extremly squimish when it comes to needles. I just hate to think they are putting me through this for no reason.
Please share your advice and experience.(other than talk to your doctor please)

Please remember I had a healthy baby girl with GD before. I was given the chance to diet before the needle 4 times a day! I was able to control it. My numbers were not bad this time, just a bit high at 2 hours and 3 hours.

I had gestational 2 years ago....I had a 7lb12oz daughter...
I also have a 18 year old and never had gestational..
I think it was cuz I am older now, starting over.
I did have to test my blood. But that was it and control it with diet. It was real simple for me~my blood sugar never got over like 155....
Stay away from carbs..>I still to this day stay away from alot of carbs....Moderation
Good Luck.

For my older son it was diet control too. He gave me a diet to follow and checked my sugars at my apts.( He was 9lb 6oz.)
Younger son I had to do finger sticks and I had to take a class with a nutrisionist and went over meals. (8lb 7 oz two weeks early.)
Its so odd the diet control is just not good enough any more .
I can say times have changed In 8 years for sure. I guess their getting stricter on making sure your sugar levels stay safe. Take care of your self girl.

Baby girl!!! what we want in the end is a very healthy mommy and baby!! This is the reason for testing 4 times a day. You will see a pattern if you journal all of this.

GD almost guarentees you will become diabetic before the end of your life line! Note I said Almost!

The lancet isn't exactly a needle! You can do this for the health of your baby. Just hold the lancet to off the pad of your finger and hit the plunger. You can't see the tip, so no fear! It only stings for a few seconds.

Now change your food plan to what the doctor recommended the first time around, walk a lot, and be happy!

You are older now and in the past 6 years things have changed. Studies of women pregnant with gestational diabetes show increased risks for both mother and child . The child can have heart defects, genital or urinary tract defects and problems with fluid during the pregnancy. Mothers who have gestational diabetes may have problems with delivery and their babies can have slowed lung development and low blood sugar at birth that can result in seizures and brain damage if they don't recieve vigilant blood testing for low sugar. It is easy to see why attention to your diet and frequent testing are needed.
I am sure the doctor is hoping that the knowlege that you have to be careful will be enough to keep things in check. But if he has you testing 4 times a day he is looking to see if the load on your pancreas is getting too high for your diet and exercise to compensate .
I am sure he has told you that women who have gestational diabetes will often become full blown diabetics within 10 years after their first need for insulin.
The good news is that with a good diet and perhaps the addition of insulin later in the pregnancy, you will be able to avoid all of these problems and have the healthy baby evevryone wants.
Talk to your doctor about using a small test meter like the Accu-check that I have. Take your test samples from the sides of your fingers rather than the tip where there are so many nerve endings.
You have something very important to be doing this for, your baby and yourself so follow the plan, do your best and think about that beautiful baby you will hold in your arms in a few months. Best Wishes

Diabetes in any form can be very unsettling. But, your best defense is self preparation to understand you condition now and where you have a big input to guide it for the rest of your life.
