Primary goals for women with gestational diabetes include:?

Primary goals for women with gestational diabetes include:

a. well controlled blood glucose levels.
b. birth of a healthy newborn.
c. minimal fat storage.
d. all of the above
e. a and b only

a?

I'm guessing this is a test question ... those are always trickier. It's definitely A, but is it also b ... ? I guess it would depend on what your instructor or book said. I would think for a test question it's probably just a. I mean ... b is obvious, but not always something within our control.

I don't think minimal fat storage would necessarily be one ... not all GD patients are fat, if they're thin they will be encouraged and expected to put on some fat. When I had GD I was a little overweight and I started losing weight ... and the doctors started to panic and say I should be putting some on. I was controlling my sugars with diet and exercise and succeeding.

I would think it is for sure a and b (neonatal death is not a desired outcome and prevention of such is a primary goal), but minimizing fat storage is important to the health of the mother also, so I would choose D. all of the above.

Hope this helps.

Having well controlled blood sugar during pregnancy will help you have a healthy baby at delivery. If your blood sugar is too high during pregnancy your baby will be born with a high birth weight and most likely very broad shoulders which makes for a very hard delivery. Controlled blood sugar also helps the baby's own health when he/she is born because it's less likely to experience low blood sugar after birth and respiratory difficulties.

Watching your sugar is critical when you are pregnant. I was gestational for my first pregnancy and a full blown diabetic with my second with twins, and the doctors were really impressed at how healthy my babies were when they were born. They said that it showed (in the babies health) that I took care of myself.

Hope this helps and good luck to you!!!
