Gestational diabetes what to do when blood sugars are high during morning fast?


I checked my blood levels for the first time this morning and they were at 181. My doctor told me it should be at 95. How do I lower it? He didnt tell me what to do if it was high, he just told me to check it before I eat breakfast and check it 2 hours after lunch. I am new to all of this and have been waiting for a dietician to call me and tell me what my next steps are. I was just diagnosed yesterday morning and the health of my child is on the line here so I am pretty worried about what I should do to lower these blood sugar levels. Sorry if I sound like an idiot who doesnt know what she is talking about.... because I dont LOL.

I also just checked after lunch and I am at 256. No I didnt eat anything too big or carby. I had green beans and cream of mushroom soup. I also ate an apple with ground cinnamin... I am pregnant people... odd combinations taste yummy lol. But I know that is waaaaaayyyyy too high.

I agree with 'justwondering' you should call the doctor and tell him. You definitely need to be on insulin ( rapid acting ) 3 times/day premeals//

Contact the dietitian or ask the doctor to arrange for you and get a Diabetes Educator to educate you on insulin therapy/techniques and further management on diabetes; your lifestyle modification.

You need to continue monitoring your blood glucose pre meals and 2 hour post meals at least 4-6 times per day until your next review with your doctor ?diabetologist/diabetes educator. Post 2 hours of meal should be around 120mg/dl
Once you are been monitored and undergone the education, you would more confident and motivated.. :)

Don't get too anxious and completely restrain yourself from eating....your baby still need to grow and be healthy throughout the whole pregnancy or you would get ended up with hypoglycaemia ( low blood sugar ).

I am not a doctor, but I do have hypoglycemia. I can pretty much bet you that if your final meal of the day has lots of protein and low carb vegetables... nothing carby like bread, potatoes,rice,your blood sugar will improve.

Low carb vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, mustard greens, turnip greens, turnips, cabbage, asparagus, zuchini, spaghetti squash, bell peppers of various colors, avocado, egg plant. If you want dessert low carb fruit such as strawberries, raspberris, blackberries etc are wonderful with a small amount of homemade, sugarfree whipped cream.

P.S. Yes, I've been there three times. I understand the odd desires for food. But, uncontrollable sugar/insulin levels can also contribute to odd food cravings. The number was way too high. You need to get to the doctor or even ER. Your insulin needs to come down. I do recur reading that a 10-20 minute walk after eating can aid in lowering insulin.

You can try cutting your carbs at night to reduce your morning sugars, but you're pretty far out of the ballpark for what's considered normal.

256 is very high. You are at risk for ketoacidosis at that level. Please, please call your doctor NOW.

Definitely report back to your doctor immediately. They may want to put you on insulin for the remainder of your pregnancy.

Call your doctor today and tell him how high your blood sugars are. You are in the range which requires insulin. Your baby absolutely requires it. Do not wait for someone to call you. You must get back in there.

Blood sugars this high can cause more than just big babies, they can cause birth defects.
