Questions about glucose testing for Gestational Diabetes? |
Hi all. I am so frustrated right now. I found out I have GD. I do not have diabetes in my family and it was a big surprize as I was not overweight prepregnancy and never have been. Anyways, I went to an endocrinologist today. He wants me to test 6 times a day with levels of 90/100/120. He talked so fast and was hard to understand. He was foreign. I thought I got it all but now am home and lost. I called and am waiting for a call back. I believe he told me to have the 90 level upon waking, 100 an hour after lunch, and 120 after dinner. Does this sound right? And other than testing at wake, after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner (4 times) when else to test. I don't think he even told me this. I left quite upset. This is all a lot of work and I have a hard time getting out of work for all these darn appointments. I have to see the nutritionist next week. This is my first baby and we want several. I am so nervous that this will be a problem everytime. Thanks for help You don't have to have diabetes running through your family to get gestational diabetes. Various hormones may have caused abnormal insulin levels and thus causing your GD. The good news is that gestational diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born. You will need to test several times a day (just like your dr. said) to make sure your glucose levels are normal. Those levels sound about right. It is imperative to keep these levels normal or you and the baby may have complications during labor. When you see your nutritionist, she will give you a meal plan that will keep your glucose at a normal level. Besides eating healthy, exercising will keep your blood sugar levels down. Try walking about 30 minutes every day. Your are at risk for having GD again, so your dr. may advise to not have as many children as you would like to minimize risks to you and the baby. Good luck |
