Hypoglycemia and gestational diabetes?

I just found out I failed my GD test. I was hypoglycemic before I got pregnant. How can hypoglycemia lead to GD? Some information I read said mothers with GD are more at risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes. I have never had a weight problem in my life and my blood sugar is low, how can I be at risk for the exact opposite? Its confusing to me. Anyone out there also have hypoglycemia before getting preg and have GD?

It was the one where they give you a drink then take your blood after an hour. I have to go back in for a 3hr one

1st> I failed the test too, told them they were full of it & they retested & I was fine! Take a new test!
2nd> If you already had a sugar issue then it's not unlikely to swing back & forth when A) pregnant B) on certain meds C) when sick
3rd> There are 5 types of diabetes. If you have an autoimmune version & weren't tested properly (many dr's just typed people based on the age they showed symptoms vs testing for actual type) it would account for this. My Mom was misdiagnosed for years as type 2 because she was an adult. She was actually type 1.5 which is adult onset type 1 diabetes. It took her near coma to get correctly typed.
4th> You can have a glucose intolerance & it has nothing to do with your sugars at all!
Try this site. Use the symptom tracker & the articals then demand a referral to an endocronologist. Get accurate info & do whats best for you! http://www.webmd.com/
Hope this helps. congrats on baby!

I don't know why, but people with hypoglycemia are at higher risk for developing diabetes. Maybe the hypoglycemia is caused by the pancreas overproducing insulin, and then the pancreas eventually wears itself out.

Also, pregnancy hormones can cause a rise in blood glucose, thus causing GD. You'll probably find that as your pregancy progresses, your blood glucose will rise even more, and that your blood glucose will go back to normal after your baby is born.

Was this the test where you only got one blood draw after drinking the sweet stuff or was it the hourly test? I failed the initial test but passed the hourly blood draw.

I also had GD and have no weight problems, etc. I was shocked that I had GD. I had no other risk factors either. My dr said the placenta was causing it and once I delivered it would most likely be gone and it was. For some reason GD is a flag for developing future type 2 diabetes, but its not a guarantee. I know people who had GD and after more than twenty years later still no type 2 d.They say future pregnancies will most likely also be GD, but again, I know people who had it in some pregnancies and not in others. GD is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, but if you do what your told by your dr, things usually all work out in the end. I heard the new standard numbers are supposed to be lowered for precaution and this means a lot more people are going to be watching their sugar levels during pregnancy because they will "fail" their sugar tests according to the new standards. I was borderline, so luckily I handled my gd with diet and exercise, but trust me, I suffered with morning sickness all the time up until i delivered so eating constant snacks, etc. was awful at times, but injecting insulin into myself would have been much worse. My baby is healthy and almost 18 months old now, so keep focused on the prize, it all goes by fast. Good luck!
