Gestational diabetes Insulin question...?? |
Hi I am 28 weeks pregnant and have been having real trouble with my sugars. oh my gosh. make sure that your midwife sends you for all the appropriate tests to confirm your diagnosis. a midwife, though great at delivering babies, is not a diabetes specialist. my Dr tried to put me on insulin after a single high finger stick test. i went to see the nutritionist, the diabetes specialist, and got set up with insulin and everything... but i just didnt feel right about it. i followed a strict diabetic exchange diet ( a real pain, by the way), and monitored my sugar levels really carefully. i never did start the insulin, and my sugar levels maintained at a normal level for the rest of the pregnancy. not that you may not end up having to do the insulin thing, but just make really sure. if i had gone ahead and started those shots, it probably could have ended up killing my baby, and myself!! Although midwives are wonderful wonderful people... they are not doctors nor endocrinologists... I'm not trying to be smart or rude, but only a physician is qualified to say whether someone needs to be on insulin... and to my knowledge gestational diabetes is controlled by diet and not medication... Sapphriafire's right. It is normal for blood sugars to elevate after eating then become normal once your body has a chance to regulate itself. That's why there is the "2 hour" rule. Check your blood sugars before eating and then again AT LEAST 2 hours after. If they are almost back to "normal", then your body's functioning as it should. You probably should consult an endocrinologist before starting any medication. |
