Can Gestational Diabetes lead to hypoglycemia? |
I'm doing research for a friend that had 2 GD pregnancies 8-10 years ago and is experiencing hypoglycemic symptoms lately. She is fine when she wakes up in the morning but will experience sleepiness, extreme hunger, headache and become light headed shortly after eating cereal for breakfast. If she does not eat often, the same thing happens throughout the day. Is there a relationship between having GD and developing hypoglycemia years later? I do know that having gestational diabetes can lead later in life to type 2 diabetes. And sometimes during the early onset of type 2 you can have episodes of hypoglycemia. After hasving gest. diabetes she should be checkes yearly for signs of diabetes. Theoretically yes. Think about it this way. When you have diabetes in any form, your blood sugar will run higher than it is supposed to, and your body gets used to it. For example, let's say your friend's average blood sugar during her pregnancy was 170 (normal is 80-120). And then when she had the baby, her blood sugar levels returned to normal and were averaging about 90. If her blood sugar dropped to around 80 or so her body (which was used to a blood sugar of 170) would think it was "low" and initiate the adrenaline response to raise the body's blood sugar. The adrenaline response is what causes the symptoms of hypoglycemia. Make sense? hey a question i can answer from experience! tell your friend to keep a record of what she is eating. if it is mostly carbs i.e. bread, cereal, pasta....or a lot of stuff that high in sugar, then she needs to go through a lifestyle change. I have conditional hypoglycemia. the symptoms of it are shakiness, hunger but not wanting to eat, headaches, sleepiness....pretty much what you are describing. yes this is very possible. GD could have led to problems with her pancreas. mine is overactive and produces too much insulin when my blood sugar levels go up, meaning that it is very quickly depleted. she should also know exactly where to find the pulse on her wrist and when she feels fine, how strong it is. If the pressure goes down and she is famailiar with normal, she will know that she needs to eat. i suggest eating more protein, less carbs and sugar, and eating something more substantial for breakfast. and always always always carry a granola bar. sugar is not the way to go when bringing blood glucose levels back up for hypoglycemics. it is actually a piece of bread or crakcers with peanut butter or another hgh protein spread if she is allergic. i hope this helped and try the website, tell her to take the hypo quiz. from experience...I think so. and it doesn't even have to be years later. I just had a baby 4 months ago and I had gestational diabetes. I was okay for like a week after I had him but it didn't last long. I'm hypoglycemic now and Im having to eat every 3 hours now and I'm only 15. so you can only imagine what this is doing to my body. sometimes when I eat I gag because im so sick of eating. I hate it. and if I don't eat I feel like im minutes away from passing out and im shaky and sweaty. |
