Rubella Innoculations - Was it for girls only? |
I remeber having a rubella jab at school, but I was sure only the girls got it, as german measles can be dangerous to a fetus. But my G/F says that her brother also had the jab at school? rubella was and still is only for girls.....for the exact reason that you stated.. The girls were the only ones as you say, we were about 13 or so. Maybe he's thinking of the BCG we all had about a year after... Yes girls only. Yes it is just for girls, as you rightly say it's because of the damage it can do to the foetus. just for girls arent we lucky ;-) Little boys get a measles/mumps/rubella vaccine because (aside from reducing the risk of getting rubella for the boy) if a little boy gets it and spreads it around where a newly pregnant woman could pick it up it is dangerous for her baby. My sons both got the Rubella/mumps/measles jabs in 1991 as a matter of course. When I was in elementary school (in Canada) only girls got it. Just for the girls, for the reason you mentioned - getting german measles during pregancy can cause problems for the child. Is she getting confused between rubella = german measles, and plain measles? They are different and her brother could well have had a jab for that definately only for girls.... maybe her bro had the TB jab and got confused. |
