I got a few questions about oral and genital herpes.?

Is it possible to get genital herpes from someone performing oral sex that has oral herpes? (Gf has cold sore, blow me, could I got genital herpes?)

I think I have oral herpes, if I give her oral sex, would she than have genital herpes? (I might have cold sore, lick my gf's pus sy, could she than get genital herpes from me?)

If both cases are true, wouldn't genital herpes populations be really high? I mean since supposly 80% of population has oral herpes, and most people perform oral sex for their partner. Also, just how common is oral herpes? Does anybody has some kind of number from WHO, NIH?

If a person never has any kind of sex or kiss a girl before. Could he have oral herpes? If so, how? Does air kissing count? (barely touching cheek, not like blowing kiss in the air)

thanks.

Yes, it is possible to get genital herpes from someone performing oral sex on you who has oral herpes. This is true even when they do not have a visible cold sore - herpes is not infectious all the time but is sometimes infectious when there are no symptoms at all. I caught genital herpes from receiving oral sex and my boyfriend had no symptoms at the time.

Most oral herpes is caused by the hsv1 virus and genital herpes is normally caused by hsv2, so what you end up with is a case of genital hsv1 which is less severe than genital hsv2 in that it recurrs less often - it prefers to be on your mouth.

Yes, most people catch oral herpes as children - being kissed by relatives etc. My boyfriend still remembers catching oral herpes from an aunt when he was five. It has to be skin to skin contact. 4 out of 5 people - 80% - have oral herpes in the uk (95%by age 50), maybe 60% in the US, but the numbers are declining because people now realise cold sores are infectious.

If you already have oral hsv1, you are more or less protected against catching it genitally, although the risk is higher if your girlfriend were to give you oral sex when she has an open sore. When you have the virus in one place in your body, you develop antibodies that protect you against getting it in another. I have accidentally had sex with my boyfriend while having an outbreak of genital herpes, and he must have come into contact with the virus, but he did not catch it as he already has the same virus orally. Rarely it does happen - but all the cases I have heard of involve a partner who has just caught herpes and is therefore more infectious or an open sore (higher levels of virus).

The reason comparatively few people have genital hsv1 compared to hsv2 when most people now practice oral sex is because so many people already have hsv1 orally and this protects them. That basically means that 80% of the population cannot catch herpes from oral sex.

Declining numbers of people with oral herpes in the UK have seen up to 40% of new genital herpes cases caused by hsv1 being caught through oral sex.

If you don't have oral herpes yourself the risk is very high - both my sister and I who didn't catch oral herpes as children caught hsv1 genitally through oral sex by our early twenties. People with oral herpes are infectious about 18% of the time, even sometimes when a sore is not visible.

If you are worried, a simple blood test can tell you if you have hsv1, then you would know how high your risk would be. If you both definitely have it, I wouldn't worry, other than making sure you avoid outbreaks, even if they get no further than that warning tingle on your lip.

yes it is almost certain, herpes is very prevelant in the population, it will only transfer if you or your gf has an actual sore on your lip, so keep clear of any oral and even kissing if either of you has a coldsore (herpes simplex), it can very easily transfer to the genitals

Most people don't know they have herpes until they have an outbreak. Even with STD testing of blood, it won't show. You have to have an actual physical outbreak in order to be tested.
If you went down on her while you had a cold sore, there is potential for your girlfriend to get herpes. There are two types of herpes. Simplex 1, simplex 2. One is genital herpes, the other is oral herpes. You could be able to contract herpes from your parents. If your mother had an outbreak when she was pregnant, it could be passed. Also, if people have outbreaks and don't wash their hands, there is much controversy over getting herpes that way if you have an open wound.
No matter what, stay clear of that pus-pus until you are all better. lol also, make sure to be really clean.

The answer more or less is YES. HSV2 in general is genital herpes. However, you could get HSV1 on your genitals....If your GF has HSV1 on her mouth, and she has a cold sore and gives you head, you can get HSV1 on your genitals. Same with you...if you have a cold sore and go down on your girl, then she could get HSV1 on the genital area. This cross infection can happen when sexual partners have oral-genital relations.

This site might help better explain it from a more professional stand point I think:

A person could get HSV1 on their mouth by never having any sort of sexual contact what so ever. Say, when you were a kid, and someone kisses you on the lips like an aunt or your mom, and they had a cold sore....they could pass HSV1 on to you.
You can't get it from air kissing...it's a skin to skin thing. It's not airborne.

As was already pointed out - if you both have hsv1 orally already - you have significant protection against contracting it genitally but it's not 100% protection. you should still avoid performing oral sex on a partner when you have a cold sore present just to err on the side of caution. Plus a cold sore is an open portal into your body for bacteria from the genital area to infect and potentially cause you problems so it's a good idea not to do it for your own safety too.

The rates of oral infection with hsv1 in the US are 60% according to the last NHANES study. The rate of hsv1 genitally in newly diagnosed genital herpes infections is on average 30% ( in the under 30 age group it's the cause of 60% of all newly diagnosed genital herpes infections ). Because the rate of infection with hsv1 orally is declining in the US more folks are susceptible to infection with hsv1 genitally from mostly oral sex.

As adults -we are most likely to contract hsv1 orally thru kissing - the making out kind of kissing , not social pecks. Our immune systems work well to protect us from germs in general and it takes more than just contact with the virus to infect us - it takes some heat and friction which doesn't happen when just pecking or sharing food/drinks.

If both of you have hsv1 orally it's pretty easy - just avoid performing oral sex when you have a cold sore. Other than that there are few worries.
