Can oral herpes become genital herpes?

I recieved oral sex from my boyfriend while he had a sore on his lips, and now I have genital sores. I know that the two types of herpes are different. I would like to know why if he gave me type 1 (oral herpes) I am having a genital outbreak, which would be considered type 2, if I'm correct?

No - There are two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV)- HSV 1 and HSV 2. HSV 1 is the common oral type of infection causing "cold sores" that appear during periods of stress or sometimes due to exposure to sun. While HSV-1 is usually found in the area of the mouth and HSV-2 is usually found in the genital area, there can be transfer between the two areas (oral to genital and genital to oral).

Outbreaks can be prevented with antiviral medications such as Valtrex (valacyclovir) made by Glaxo Smithkline (GSK).

Unfortunately, yes! You now have herpes and should go to the doctor ASAP. Many people believe that just because a sore is on ones mouth, that it can't be spread to ones genitals. This is just wrong , uninformed thinking! Herpes Simplex 1 and 2 are very commonly "mixed" together and are, once again, on the rise in our society. You should also be tested for other STDs as well.
