My son had an appt. today and the doc said he would like me to set up an appt for genetic testing?

what can the doctor find out through the info that he gets with the results. my son has a few things wrong that are personal but minimal nothing really huge like down syndrom. but things like he's under weight he is delayed in speech etc....oh and he has an ear tag. which means nothing really a lot of people have that and you get it cut off. thats it

so why would the doc want to do this?

has anyother parent was asked to do this and what were you told about the results that will help your son or daughter?

thanks cmb 5283 that helps a lot. i get it.

others you can share as well please thanks

There are a few syndromes commonly known to cause mild facial abnormalities and developmental delay. In the past two decades chromosomes can be studied more acutely, hence there have been described many more less common syndromes that account for these physical and mental findings.

I think your doctor is trying to be thorough in order that he/she can direct your son's treatment as best as possible. Also, certain genetic abnormalities can be passed on to future generations, not only by your son, but sometimes by other apparently non-affected brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins. A geneticist or genetic counselor is the best person to discuss this with you.

The doctor could be looking for any abnormality that could suggest a reason for his delays in growth and in his speech. The doctor may be looking for a specific disorder or for just anything "out of place." I'd def do it because it could let you know if there is a disorder or abnormality that will have more effects on him or if his weight and speech delay are related or un-related. The testing may show no abnormalities which should be a relief because then you know your son has no major illnesses effecting his body.

I was tested and they found out a reason for my anxiety and for my menstral cycle abnormality. Two things they were not even looking for.

Yes, my mom had to do that with my sister. The reason why he probably asked about genetic testing was to check to see if his issues were genetic or not; and he can not start going through your genes, and family's genes if he doesn't know FOR SURE that he is your son; otherwise it would be a waste of time, and he could lose money.

I hope this helps!

The doctor maybe looking for something that he suspects but is not sure about, and doesn't want to worry you by telling you what it is he suspects. A lot of parents tend to get scared as soon as their hear the doctor talk about performing a test that they think they know what it is and start to assume a whole buncha things about it. Don't worry, your son is fine, I know your pretious one will be fine! Pray and believe and know that you are a good mother by taking your son to the doctor in the first place and not being a mom who thinks; Oh he is just a kid, he will be fine! I am sure he will, but don't worry ahead of time, just wait, have faith and everything will be A okay! Let us know plz?

I would personally ask the doctor a lot of questions as to why he wants to do these genetic tests and what he hopes/thinks it will accomplish. But I always ask a lot of questions.

Good Luck
