Does anyone know more about Tourette's than the internet? What are my chances of having kids with it? |
My husband and I would like to have children but Tourette's runs in his family. Somehow he doesn't have it, It's the strangest thing. His mother's family all had it, (the boys anyway) and her brothers were severely debilitated by it, one of them even killed himself. I can't help but feel a little angry towards her for not giving things a second thought before reproducing herself. Her oldest son is really struggling with the disease, still living at home, sort of an angry hermit, if you will. Because I have these feelings about my MIL (sometimes I think she made a stupid decision but of course I would never tell anyone this) I am wary to make the same choice, but hopeful because my husband has somehow managed to not have it... HELP. No one has an answer. It seems that science has yet to catch up with this disease, there is no genetic testing that can be done. Thanks anaise, just to fill you in though if their child is still 4, tourette's doesn't show up until around elementary school. (typically) I have Tourettes and and life really isnt that bad. I am different but i cant wait to have kids. Yes it can be hard at times, more so during the dreaded childhood years but it gets better. I dont know if you have to worry about your kids having it. I would say worry if your husband did because then you would have a 50/50 shot. But i mean come on you should have kids. This is 2007 not 1905, we are not looked at like we use to be. Best of luck to you. My Tourette's makes me, me. My husbands friends wife has tourette's and had a child. The child doesn't have tourettes although they have detected a learning disability in the child at age 4. This should not keep you having a family. Get involved and learn more about tourettes. Contact the United Way in your local area to get connected with a non-profit group or contact Mental Health Mental Retardation Authority(MHMRA) in your area. |
