If you had a newborn infant would you want it tested for genetic disorders?

give me your opinion!

You could, but then what? Worry? Have an abortion?

So my answer would be no. My first reason is many persons do fine with genetic disorders, become strong through adversity and lead successful lives.

My second reason is that research is finding cures for many of these disorders and technology is constantly improving.

My third reason is that research has found that many genetic disorders are actually caused by environmental hazards such as uranium, coal tar, manganese, lead, and pesticides to name a few. So trying to defeat genetic disorders without trying to defeat contaminants is putting the cart before the horse.

My brother worried so much when his wife was pregnant because our family carries an endocrine genetic disorder. The baby was born healthy, and he grew into a healthy young man. Never a health problem. At age sixteen, his life was snuffed out by a drunk driver. I mention this because the point is we cannot protect our children from all the tragedies which can befall them, and most of all, it does no good whatsoever to worry.

I have a 7 month old and there's no way i would have tested. I love him and wouldn't change a thing about him even if he did have a disorder...
I didn't realize you could test them after they're born anyway...I know you can have tests done when your pregnant.

No! Why?

That would be crazy and obsessive, unless their was a very good reason. If there was a good reason, your health visitor or GP would point it out.

I would most definitely have them tested as soon as the doctors would agree to it BUT only because I have four genetic blood clotting disorders and it would be extremely important to know if the child was at risk. I have:

Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome
Anticardiolipin Antibody Syndrome
MTHFR &
Factor 5 Leiden

Otherwise, I wouldn't have it done because it wouldn't matter because I would love my child the same regardless. As a matter of fact, blood clotting genetic disorders would be the only things I wanted tested.

Disorders or not, I know I would love my baby so much that nothing else would matter.

^^ you can have tests done no matter what age.. their just testing their DNA... u could be 50 n get a test done...

But yes i would. Not that it would change anything, i wouldnt have an abortion just because of a result. I would just want to know so that i could be well prepared. So i'd know the facts, and what to expect. Least if i knew it was 'coming' id be better able to give the baby the care/specialist care it needs.
thats just my opinion anyway...!

Well I know after they are born the hospital usually does a blood test where they take a bit of blood from their heel and that tests for all kinds of things. I had an amnio done before the baby was born to test for genetic disorders. I would assume that if there was a problem with your child your dr. would recommend testing and I guess if my dr. would recommend it I would probably have it done? The baby could need medication?

sheesh!! These people are weird. of COURSE you should have them tested.. Some conditions need treatment!

Like the PKU test they do to find out if a baby has PKU. t his is essential, because if the baby DOES have PKU he can get brain damage from eating artificial sweetners..even bananas I think...

Or hemophillia!! Your baby could bleed to death if you were unaware it had this condition.. come on..

Sure.. love your baby no matter what.. but don't be a moron and refuse to find OUT if it's normal.. That's like a person with a deaf child refusing to find out if he can hear or not. . meanwhile the child becomes a toddler and notohing is done to enable him to communicate! How is that love??

I mean.. putting something IN the baby (immunizations) is one thing, but taking a little bit of blood to see if he has genetic disorders that need treatment, that's just called NOT being a moron!!

The harshness of my answer was not directed at you, but at the morons who answered that the wouldn't want to know if there was anythign wrong with the baby..

What kind of mother wouldn't test their child!
when my aunt was pregnant her child was tested for genetic disorders. So when the baby is born and if it has a gentic disorder, you could probably correct the disorder while it's still growing
or you could treat it properly once it is born
you'd rather find out that the baby has a breathing problem while it is inside so you will be able to give the baby oxygen sooner. it's better than having the baby dying once it comes out due to lack of air and you have the doctors scratching their heads wonder what the problem is! if you know what's best for the child you would have it tested for genetic disorders and tend to the babies needs as soon as possible. ofcousre your love for the baby shouldn't change
