Is diabetes a Genetic disorder?

I have to do a project on a genetic disorder and I was hoping to do it on diabetes, but I'm not sure if it's a genetic disorder. My teacher needs proof that it is a genetic disorder in order to let me do the project on it, so if you have any links that prove it, please send them too.

Thanks 鈾?/div>

Risk factors for getting diabetes does include family history, obesity, age, and even race. You can read more here

I have no web sites. But my grandmother and my mother are both diabetics. I am insulin resistance. My grandmother died from complications from the disease. She was my mothers mom.

have alook at www.diabetes.co.uk it may be on there...

or look at my blog

hope you get what you need

not really, just go to http://www.diabetes.org/genetics.jsp or go to wikipedia or search for diabetes on the net or from a book

For the most part, it is genetic, but through lifestyle changes I believe it can be under control to the point of no medicines etc....

You can inherit the susceptibility for diabetes. Check out these links.

I believe Diabetes is one of those things you can inherit but can control.

Hi, diabetes is genetic, but it is very complex and if it runs in your family you can be more likely to develop one type of diabetes than others- there are different types of diabetes.

I recommend reading this article about diabetes. Here is the link-
http://ezinearticles.com/?Is-Diabetes-Ge...

are you doing it on type 1 or type 2? they say that type 1 can run in the family, you cannot prevent this type of diabetes...if it's gonna happen, it will happen, there is nothing you can do about it. you cannot stop it, you can never come off insulin (unless they find a cure), and you can't just control this type with diet and exercise. but i just want to make sure you know that some of the answers people give on here are incorrect. that is why you need to specify which type you want to work on. a lot of people automatically assume you're talking about type 2, or they don't understand the difference between the 2 diseases.

try going to the american diabetes association website, and see what they have to say, or what links they have to information about it. good luck with your project.

I think there's still too much mystery about the disease to complete a successful thesis on diabetes as an evidenced genetic disease. Type 2 has documented genetic ties, but if I were in your place, I'd choose a different topic for the simple reason that you'll be left with a lot of dead ends in your project. For instance:
1.) Type 1 can be hereditary, but not always.
2.) Why are the islet cells targeted for elimination to begin with? Scientists know that it could be genetics or a virus, but can't pinpoint which viruses, and which hereditary factors. It's inconsistent from person to person. Also, sometimes it's neither of those things, rather it's a fluke.
3.) Type 2 diagnosis can be prevented, certainly postponed, with a healthy lifestyle, even with a predisposition.

I'm just not sure you'll have the same luck chosing diabetes as an evidenced genetic disease, as you would something... well.... with more evidence. There are lots of interesting topics not "done-to-death" in the classroom. Like Marfan's, Crohn's, or cystic fibrosis. Those topics might leave you a little less frustrated trying to meet your teacher's expectations.

type 2 diabetes has a genetic link. type 1 diabetes does not.

No, sorry. Its an Autoimmune disorder. Type 1 can run in the family sometimes, but sometimes it doesn't. It is commonly thought that type 2 is genetic but it is the other way around.

Are you doing it on type one or type two diabetes?? I just did a 13 page research paper for school on type one diabetes (the kind that I have) and you have to make sure you know the differance between the two different types. Although it is a rare form of the disease you could look up MODY Diabetes. It is a proven genetic form of the disease. I did some research on it for my paper. They have even identified some of the genes that cause it, here is one website that I have. http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/clin... If you do a search on it more websites will come up.

You can also go look as websites like the JDRF.org, and Joslin.org. (These have information on Type One Diabetes) I just took my son into Boston for genetic testing at the Joslin Diabetes Center, so there website might have some information for you. You defiantly have to choose either type two or type one diabetes. My doctor told me that type two usually runs in family's, but type one does not. The are two different diseases. When I wrote my paper for school, I explained both kinds of disease and then made sure it was clear what kind I wrote my paper on.

no, it is not a genetic disorder! they may be genetic factors in people developing Type II diabetes, but a lot of people with Type I have no family history. so, no, i wouldn't call it a "genetic disorder".

Type 2 is genetic. Type 1 can be.
