If you are born gay, does that not mean being gay is a genetic disorder?

If you are born gay, does that not mean being gay is a genetic disorder?

(No I have no problem, just curious)

Genetic maybe, but not a disorder. Homosexuality was removed from the DSM-II in 1973, and is no longer considered a disorder.

There is some evidence that there is a genetic component to sexual orientation, although there are most likely other factors involved as well.

However, having a particular trait from birth does not necessarily mean it's genetic. Neurological development is influenced by a variety of environmental factors during prenatal development. For example, the presence of certain hormonal inbalances can cause a fetus that is genetically and physiologically female to develop neurological features that are characteristic of males. Although the disorder can be corrected with hormone therapy begining at birth, girls with this disorder continue to display stereotypically male play behavior throughout childhood.

It's well established that there are physiological differences in the neurology of homosexual individuals as compared to heterosexual individuals. Homosexual individuals tend to show some sexually dimorphic features that are characteristic of the opposite sex. This could be the result of any combination of genetic and environmental factors, and these factors need not be the same for all individuals.

Homosexuality isn't a disorder of any kind, and nope, it's not hereditary.

No one is born gay. Its the world that makes people think that its not disgusting anymore.

i have never ever heard of anyone being born gay i really dont think there is a such thing. so i would say no there is no genetic disorder

being gay is not a disorder anyway

just because it's present from birth doesn't necessarily make it genetic or a disorder... it's no different than, say, preferring certain foods from birth/a very young age.

Of course its not hereditary gays can't have children the questioned asked If you are born gay, does that not mean being gay is a genetic disorder?

Thay always say they were born gay

Possibly...although I agree that the word "disorder" is too strong. Red hair is determineded by genetics and it is not a disorder.
I don't think science has this question answered yet. The way they try to determin how much of a trait is caused by genetics and how much is caused by environment is by studying identical twins. There are identical twins out there and one can be gay and the other straight.
Also, they are finding DNA in other places in the cell, like the ribosomes. They are only just beginning to understand the influence that these genes have on a person's actual traits. They call these epigenic traits. So you see, it get really complicated, really fast.

Being gay is not a disorder, however, chances are it is genetic. It's not like these people say "Hmmm, today i think i'll change my sexual orientation to men or women"..these people are like this by nature, just like you are me is straight they are gay, its innate in them, and theres nothing wrong with it

i dont think you are born gay, its how you end up, so no its not a genetic disorder

I myself am straight but, I imagine it is only if you consider being gay a disorder and your parents would have had to have some homosexual tendendancies. I am from the "old school where gay meant happy and carefree. Not what your sexual prefrerances lie.

It's not a genetic disorder, but that's the way things are meant to be. It's not treatable, if that's what you mean...

I'm gay and being gay is not a genetic disorder. It is not passed down in your family. We are just born with slight differences in our brains. Like gay men have been medically proven to have a female part to their brain that attracts them to men...just like a straight woman!!

Part of one's sexual orientation is genetic. This is proven, I think, in twin studies with identical twins who are raised seperately (because they were adopted out).
On the other hand it is also near certain that environment can make a person homosexual. In this case the mechanism is "conditioning". A person's homosexual behavior is "reinforced" until it becomes their primary drive.
Despite all the babble by religious morons and idiot scientists, this area has not been well studied.
As far as "disorder"... that is a judgement word. Things happen in nature because nature needs them to happen, for whatever reason. Just becuase we don't know the reason does not make it a disorder. Maybe homosexuals serve to balance some kind of weird energy somehow. who knows.

I'm with Robert in that GAY to me means happy and carefree. Homosexuality is not a disorder, in fact in many more primitive societies it was regarded as sacred and a highly valued trait. I am a Christian and it makes me love Jesus even more to know that He loves homosexuals as much as (maybe a lot more than) those people who aren't. To me the important thing is to express sexuality honestly, lovingly, and NEVER to exploit another human being. Peace & love!

You are not born gay its a choice. And no you dont just one day say, "I'll decide to change my sexual preference." But its gradual b/c more more it is displayed as normal on tv and everywhere so yea ppl can become corrupted and confused.

It's a predisposotion, which is different from being genetic. It's not like it's passed on from generation to generation. Think of it like a male is born with female characteristics, etc. A person is born male or female, but that is not part of genetics, if that makes sense. Your question is just not posed correctly. And as others have said, homosexuality is not a disorder.

Im not sure but I don,t believe people are born gay.I know a lot of people do think this, however i know a lot of gay people in my family that have turned gay after marriage and children.I even know of one woman being unhappy in her long marriage that left her husband because she fell in love with a gay woman,of course she was so unhappy is the main reason she left her marriage....NO i am not gay myself,I am married to a man and I am very happy with my life....I am almost certain that being gay is a choice, and I know that some will not agree....but thats what i think...

Please do not try to kid yourself SharkBite, you are indeed
as gay as Tinkerbell. I would place the probability of you having
your lips wrapped around a hot, throbbing johnson in the next 24
hrs at a solid 97% certainty. Yes, it is genetic. Hope this helps!

Well, let's think of all the things that could be genetic:

Intelligence
Athletic ability
Yes, sexuality
emotional tendencies

Is someone with an unusually wonderful way with words someone with a disorder? Are people born with an amazing athletic ability 'suffering from a genetic disorder'?

I think the answer to this question would be relatively subjective, and I'm quite in favor and have no problem with being gay...so you see where I'm coming from?

People are not born gay. Homosexuality, just like hetrosexuality is constructed.
The Formula For Producing A Homosexual
This formula can be illustrated in this way:
A Predisposition Toward Homosexuality Plus That First
Homosexual Experience Multiplied By Pleasurable and Positive
Homosexual Thoughts To Which Is Added More Homosexual
Experiences Multiplied By More Pleasurable
Thoughts can construct a Homosexual.
The Formula For Producing A hetrosexual: This formula can be illustrated in this way:
A predisposition towards hetrosexuality plus that first hetrosexual experiance multiplied by pleasurable and positive hetrosexual thoughts to which is added more hetrosexual experiances multiplied by more pleasurable thoughts can construct a hetrosexual.
So what is a predisposition to homosexuality. Some want to say we are born this way. You have heard of the studies, and none are conclusive. Yet there are certain facts that are or can be a
predisposition. Like having gender nonconformity. Not all children with a gender nonconformity will construct homosexuality. It may be some are born because of hormonal imballances to cause predisposition to create characteristics that seem to belong to the opposite gender, but also children can learn characteristics that seem to belong to opposite gender. So you could say some children may be born with a gender nonconformity while other children may learn gender nonconformity. Any child with a gender nonconformity is often mistaken to be gay. Often children that have a gender nonconfromity will even question themselves if they might be gay. This alone could be a predisposition to constructing homosexuality. It has been studied and it is said 1 in every 4 children will have a form of gender non conformity.
As I said not all children that construct homosexuality will have a gender nonconformity. Other predispositions to a child constucting homosexuality can be molestaion, innoscent expermintation. Often a child will make a choice, even innoscently, while very young and forget the choice or even how or what effected the choice, and later the choice could surface that they had made many years ago. Often a child is innoscent as they construct homosexuality, and as they grow, they come to believe it is natural or born in them.
You could say the same for hetrosexuality and how it is constructed in simulaur ways.
