To what extend is gene therapy effective in treating cancerous diseases?

It has shown some progress. Gendicine has been approved in China for the treatment of head and neck cancers. It is a wild type p53 containing adenovirus. A similar product is in late stage clinical trials in the US.
There are three phase III clinical trials using GDEPT for the treatment of glioblastoma.
Gene therapy is undoubtably making improvements in the treatment of cancer and other diseases but as with any new therapy there are challenges that must be overcome to further improve the outcomes.
