What diseases can be caused by raw sewage or sewage mixed with rainwater backing into your basement?

Could it cause gastrointestinal problems and severe fatigue?
Can it cause a stroke?

You didn't mention the type of exposure, long term or just short term ( i.e basement backing up due to clog in main sewer pipe)

Here is what I know.

Human exposure to raw sewage can lead to illness ranging from mild gastroenteritis, severe fatigue, cholera, Hepatitis and much more. If you have been exposed it is important to seek medical attention and be tested for various diseases immediately. Strokes and other ailments can be caused by being exposed to raw materials as well but are usually brought on by other ailments caused by the initial exposure.

Possibly typhoid or cholera, which are feces-borne diseases.

Typhoid, cholera, infectious diarrhea, e-coli, just to name a few. I don't think it could cause a stroke, but it would certainly affect your immune system.

Yes gastrointestinal-related diseases like typhoid, cholera, and amoebiasis can be a result of sewage water. Also if one has open wounds and exposed to sewage water, they might even get leptospirosis, a disease-causing microorganism that comes from the urine and feces of rats.

Fatigue is only a symptom for anybody who gets sick and is not a hallmark symptom for any particular disease.

I don't think stroke can be attributed to sewage water.

Backing up from raw sewage is a bacteria you need to get checked through your county extension agency information.

Find someone in your area to check the water for Fecal Colorform, that is the bacterias found in human waste.

Stagnated water in the pipes and other bacterias are prevelant as well I suspect, but rest assured, gastrointestinal problems and severe fatigue are a sure sign.

Always keep hands clean & out of your eyes, mouth, or any of the mucous membrane areas where people contract the diseases. Even cuts can pick up these bacterias.

Your physician should be able to answer your 2nd. 1/2 of your question. I just have the Enviornmental Waste Control experience to know about waste, blood born pathogens, and health effects of live bacterias.

I suggest getting a sump pump to get rid of the water issue, clean with bleach and hose down to keep odors down, and mold from building up. Good luck!

Stroke is unlkely but all the others are quite possible. Raw sewage contains so many diseases it is impractical to list them here. Fatigue can be caused by low grade infection.
