What diseases can be caused by raw sewage or sewage mixed with rainwater backing into your basement? |
Could it cause gastrointestinal problems and severe fatigue? You didn't mention the type of exposure, long term or just short term ( i.e basement backing up due to clog in main sewer pipe) Possibly typhoid or cholera, which are feces-borne diseases. Typhoid, cholera, infectious diarrhea, e-coli, just to name a few. I don't think it could cause a stroke, but it would certainly affect your immune system. Yes gastrointestinal-related diseases like typhoid, cholera, and amoebiasis can be a result of sewage water. Also if one has open wounds and exposed to sewage water, they might even get leptospirosis, a disease-causing microorganism that comes from the urine and feces of rats. Backing up from raw sewage is a bacteria you need to get checked through your county extension agency information. Stroke is unlkely but all the others are quite possible. Raw sewage contains so many diseases it is impractical to list them here. Fatigue can be caused by low grade infection. |
