Hospitalized with Gastroenteritis?

Has anyone been hospitalized with gastroenteritis? I had gastro.. 4 months ago, and went into the er and they kept me in the er for 12 hours, and now i have had gastroenteristis for for 4 days now, and i went to a after hours clinic last night and they told me that i have gastroenteritis... and i am in alot of pain, i cry from the pain being so bad. Do you think i should let it pass over or go to my gastroenterologist? & what possible treatment is there for this? I have taken promethazine, and it hasnt done any good?

First, I am sorry you are in so much discomfort. The promethazine is only for nausea so it won't help for pain. If you have bad cramping (with diarrhea, for example) then medicines like Levsin or Pepto Bismol usually work OK. Gastroenteritis is almost always viral, so you should not be on antibiotics....and you should never take a regular pain medication for abdominal pain! There is nothing a gastroenterologist can do for this condition, since it is viral and self limited.

However.....if their diagnosis is wrong and if something else is causing your abdominal pain treatment would be dictated by your corrected diagnosis. Other causes of abdominal pain include stomach ulcers, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, tubal pregnancy, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, ulcerative colitis, etc.

In addition to being on pain medication, you should be on an antibiotic, and if you start getting dehydrated, an IV. Call your doctor and ask for what you need.

no good answer for this....symptoms? vomiting? diarrhea? temp? If you are having pain thats not being dealt with you need to see your doc.

My daughter-in-law had surgery, and is doing great, says shes never felt better, talk to your doctor

I am a physician. Gastroenteritis is caused by many factors...some are bacterial, some flare-ups are by diet, and others are caused by a change in the body structure such as ulcerations, blockage, etc. However, in short they are an inflammation of the stomach and the small intestine. The pain is usually a cramping pain and often followed by diarrhea. While your physician is always the best one to understand your problem and give you the best possible advice (he has the advantage of all of your tests), you might begin a course of ranatidine hydrochloride as well as any of the gas-reliever drugs. You should also avoid high fiber foods and stay to a rather bland diet at this time...If I were your physician, I would want to do an examination of your gastrointestinal tract with radio-opaque dye to determine the cause. You should certainly use your gastroenterologist to ameliorate or end the problem.

You better go back & fight to be admitted back into that hospital! I had it two years ago & spent 3 days in the hospital because I had just let it go for a whole weekend thinking I just had a really bad case of the flu. I was in the most horrible pain I will probably ever experience until the day comes when I give birth to a child. I couldn't go to the bathroom if you know what I mean. At night I was awake doubled over in pain & spent half the time in the bathroom involuntarily throwing up & unfortunately I couldn't stop it...even when there was nothing else to throw up & I was dry heaving. I finally went to the ER & spent a ton of (unnecessary) time in there also. After a CT Scan & allll that waiting they were just gonna send me home w/ some minor antibiotics & a suppository for the pain & nausea. I was like hell no! I'm in the most horrible pain & i'm also not sticking anything anywhere! I actually wanted to STAY at the hospital & unfortunately my mom & I had to fight w/ my doctor AND the hospital to get admitted. They finally did & it was good cause I had peace & quiet, they put me on a clear liquid diet (broth, juice, popsicles & jell-o are good!), had me on two major heavy duty antibiotics thru an IV, gave me meds for nausea & did a colonoscopy to check my intestines to make sure there wasn't anything more serious going on. That condition is viral but everything they did still helped A TON. (The stuff they give you to clean you out for the colonoscopy most likely helped flush the virus out of my system!) When I left I was still in a bit of pain but feeling 150% better than when I went in. After a few days of resting, I was fine & able to go back to work & continue on with my life.

they need to test you for liver disease because liver disease can cause bi-directional diseases such as gastrointeritis.

I had gastrointeritits at 17. It took them days to find out what it was....actually it was more like 2 weeks.

Years later I was diagnosed with Hepatitis C and with all my other diseases, it was confirmed I was 8 when I got HCV. So get tested!!!!
