Considering travel to India this year. Partner had gastroenteritis and kidney inf last year is this wise?

She was in hospital for about a week with gastroenteritis. I would imagine her immune system has been weakened and given that serious stomach infections are widespread among travellers to India, is it wise to go in the first place. If so, what precautions should we take. Thanks a lot.

well, india is a lovely place...a great cultural experience.
however, your concerns are well founded. do visit the place, but be very careful about water and food. ensure that you only use mineral water and eat out at clean and hygenic joints. the heat and humidity also make one more susceptible to infections in summers, so its best you choose a more moderate season to visit india.
for the rest, have a great time!

I suggest that she try probiotic yoghurts (eg. Yakurt) to encourage good bacteria to flourish in her gastric system. You can also buy tablets with such bacteria to chew with your food. It will help keep at bay the bad bugs, and build up her immune system.
When in India, avoid any uncooked foods (eg. salads) and do be careful when buying bottled water (esp. from hawkers) as many of them (bottled water) are not genuine and the water is not safe. Buy from reputable shops. If you can, take a travel kettle and a good container and boil your own water to take with you. When eating fruits, wash them with water that you would use for drinking. You must be aware that water is a scarce commodity and utensils are not always washed with the same amount of water as we might use. Avoid eating in dodgy eateries, especially those with slow trade as their food may not be fresh. Avoid over spicy foods during the first few days and stay with your normal diet as long as you can and gradually ease into the local fare.
Take with you hydration salts in case you get into trouble. People in other lands are not necessarily less clean, but they do develop immunity to certain bugs over time.
