Rehydration for stomach flu (Young child)....?

My son (5 yrs.) was diagnosed with viral gastroenteritis (Stomach Flu) in the wee hours of the morning. I am concerned because after a soppository at the ER and (2) Fluid Bags through an IV he is still vomiting with no signs of stopping.
I realize I have to let it run it's course but, I've heard it can become deadly if you get TOO dehydrated.
What are the best liquids to give that are not so harsh on a child's tummy??

Great question and a really good point as well. As far as fluids are concerned, anything that he'll drink- juice, water, Popsicles, ginger-ale, even Coke (decaf- since caffeine is a diuretic). Watch for dry mucous membranes- mostly dry mouth, and if the vomiting continues for more than a few hours, call your health care provider, he may need more IV fluids. If he isn't able to pee- just get him to the hospital.
You're absolutely right- children can become too dehydrated and that can put their kidney function in jeopardy.

Good Luck! I'm a mom and I've been there- NO FUN!

Go with Pedialyte or a store brand of the same product. These are specially made to promote rehydration. I use this for myself too when I have a stomach bug or lingering fever.

I gave mine popcycles and 7 up.

gadorade

yep, pedialight and Popsicles they actually have pedialight Popsicles! you can also give him some chicken broth and lots of water!

Hope you babe feels better!

Pedialyte - - - No matter what the age!
Available at you local supermarket for sure!
Alternative- Flat diet 7-up or ginger ale

I am going through the same thing w/ my 8 year old. We were in the hospital yesterday. Everyone tells you different things that is for sure about dehydration. Worry when they don't pee within 6-8 hours or if there are no tears. They said at the hospital even Gatorade is good since my son doesn't like the pedialyte. I tasted that when he was younger too and it was gross. I was told to give my boy 2 ounces within an hour. I even dilute it with a little water too. My boy didn't get an IV and now I wish I would of chose that plan but of course he was upset and the doc. and nurse felt bad for him and didn't really think he needed it yet. Good luck oh and most important don't give really cold stuff. The nurse told me room temperature and my son likes it better, I don't think it hurts his stomach and he seems to keep it down longer.
