If you are non-compliant with you diabetes regiment will it cause you to have attacks of grastroenteritis?

My husband is a diet-controlled diabetic. He was diagnosed 1.5 years ago. He doesn't eat properly as prescribed. This year he has had 7 or 8 attacks of Gastroenteritis. Every time he sees a doctor thats the diagnosis. Is the diabetes in any way causing this? He also has high cholesterol but that was recently diagnosed.

most probably not related to diabetes
but its not normal to have this number of GE
so i think his problem is not a GE but diarrhea or loose motion (I mean it was labeled as GE but its actually due to another pathology)
so i would advise u to see a gastroenterolgest not a GP.

u need to advise him to eat properly. i hope he knows the complications of out-of-control diabetes. i've done many dressings on diabetic patients. its terrible. thats my concern for him. nobody can tell if the diabetes is causing him to have GE here.

7 or 8 times and u didnt ask the doc that qns? your doc may require ur husband to take a stool test to determine the cause.

god bless

Possibly. Any time a person's diabetes is out of control, they are at a higher risk for infections and infectous diseases of any sort.

I agree with Miss Understand that he needs a stool culture done if this has not been done already. Also, has the doctor ruled out other causes for his bowel problems, like autonomic nerve damage (neuropathy) due to the diabetes? Or other gastrointestinal diseases that are not infectious in nature?

First, your husband needs to control his diabetes. Heart attacks, heart failure, blindness, kidney failure, amputations, paniful nerve damage, just to name a few, are the likely outcomes for him if he doesn't take his condition seriously. Also, he could lose anywhere from 10-30+ years off his life. Please have him see a diabetes educator. Better control of blood sugars will also help his mood and quality of life.

Second, he needs further testing to rule out any other causes. You only get one body, you have to take care of it. Once it's gone, it's gone!

Gastroenteritis can be from the foods he is eating. A dietitian might be able to help. Of course if he is refusing to eat properly he has every reason for the problem.
