Could someone die from Gastric Bypass surgery? |
Let's say they had a hysterectomy, survived colon cancer, and has a wire mesh surrounding their stomach because it's broken and they weigh only 250 pounds, but most of that weight is centered around the belly area. Why would a doctor tell them they need Gastric Bypass, and do you think that's safe? If I were to have any surgery for weight loss it would be the lap-band. It's a laproscopic procedure and it can be reversed. The surgery your Dr. mentioned is a big surgery and a lot of people get diarrhea or vomiting after in addition to the fact that yes, a percentage will die. The lap-band is safer. Someone can die just from going under anesthesia, and yes people die from Gastric Bypass. If the benefits outweigh the risks involved, then they will probably tell you that Gastric Bypass is an option. The only way to know for sure is to talk to a Dr. One in 50 people die as a result of gastric bypass. But then again people can also die from being too overweight. When the risks outweigh the benefits then it is not a good surgery. The fat centered around the belly is the most dangerous type of fat but it too can be lost with diet and exercise. Diet and exercise is the safest route to go but I don't know all the details but doctors too easily take the easy way out because they are getting paid to do the surgery. 1 in 50 is a high risk though with the 1 person dies. All Major surgeries carry a risk because, once a patient is under anesthesia, complications can occur. Even if, a surgical procedure had one out of a billion complications, the Doc, is obligated, by law, to list every and possible scenario of a surgical procedure. If, you are unsure that this is unsafe, please seek a second opinion. However, u did not provide enough info to determine what's actually going on. I hope that this helps. |
