Low total protein & albumin levels Are Low what does this mean? pls read more in details need some advise!?

I had gastric bypass in Oct 2005 almost a yr ago and I have had leg pain, swelling, and feeling run down allot! I had my blood work done and everything is great but the Dr. I went to did not tell me my Total protein (5.8) & Albumin (3.5) were very low! I did some research & going to see a new Dr tomorrow & wanted to ask if anyone has any idea and or went through this as well & what does it mean or might mean? I am very concern due to cancer, liver and heart disease runs big time in my family. Yes I am scard PLS only serious carring answers.

The causes of low total blod protein and low albumin levels (from blood tests) are:
1) Inadequate intake of proteins (starvation)
2) Liver diseases as the live produces your blood proteins and albumin
3) Kidney diseases as the blood proteins and albumin will be eliminated in yr urine.

For your case, your gastric bypass allows you to eat less and thus, less food absorption and therefore, your body does not have enough protein. With low level of albumin, your osmotic pressure in blood vessels is low so fluids tend to accumulate in your tissues (especially in your legs) and giving you pain.

You need to take in (eat) more proteins (not fats). Do not worry about cancer or liver problems, the whole thing relates to your gastric bypass and the amount of proteins intake. Best wishes!
