Gas from having gastric bypass?

I just had gastric bypass last friday, and I have been suffering from a lot of gas. How am I supposed to get rid of it? Also, how do I go poop if Im not supposed to strain myself? Im not allowed to take pills yet. So I cant take stool softener pills. Is there a way I can crush the pills and they will work? Or are there any liquid stool softeners out there? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

I had gastric bypass in December and I too suffered with ALOT of gas pain for the first couple weeks. The reason you have so much gas is because when you were in surgery if you had laproscopic surgery they filled you belly up with air to be able to see your organs better.

The best thing you can do is to drink lots of water and walk...now just having had surgery I know you probably cannot drink as much water as you want...heck at 2 months out I struggle everyday! I would get up and just walk from room to room because the movement helps the gas to move down too.

As far as not taking pills I am surprised your doctor said you couldn't take pills, I mean you shouldn't take aspirin or asprin products but other things won't hurt you. My doctor told me to tak pepcid and I take it every day and it has made a huge difference in my having gas and my digestion. I suggest you call your doctor and ask him/her what they suggest...heck you paid for them to help you so you are not bothering them by making sure you are doing the right thing! As far as the pooping goes the other poster is correct you probably won't go alot but someone suggested to me to buy a couple jars of prune babyfood and eat a couple teaspoons a day...once I started doing that it helped me and now I don't need it at all.

Congratulations on your surgery and I wish you much success. I am documenting my journey through videos and bloging and would love to have you join in and share your success with me. Please check out my blog below and you can also find alot of great support and help from the great people at the website below my blog url. Take care! Kellie

Wow why are you asking these questions here. They just rewired your gut so don't you think the people to ask these questions are your doctors? Ask your surgeon, they need to follow up with you on what to do.

Drinking lots and lots of water and some grape juice (diluted with water) should help with keeping your stool softer in the future. Remember that, for now, you will not have a lot of waste to eliminate because you are not eating any solid food. No solid food = no bowel movements.

As far as the gas, I think you could take a little bicarbonate of soda and dissolve it in some water and drink it. It helps relieve gas; you will burp some after taking it.

None of the above should adversely affect the surgery and healing.

Good luck in your weight loss.

I had gastric bypass surgery back in January 2007. The first month I had a lot of gas. My doctor had me take the chewable tums. I found that chewable pepcid worked best for me. See what works for you. I took pills from day one but I had to crush them for the first few weeks with a pill crusher. For the "poo" problem I remember milk of magnesia was allowed. I had to use it the first few times at the beginning. Overall, just a head's up. The first six weeks sucked for me. It does get easier. I just remember thinking I made the biggest mistake of my life the first month. You'll get through it. :) I'm 13 months post op and have lost 150 lbs so far and still losing. :)
