Gastric bypass diet???

My sister is about to have gastric bypass done and i was wondering what kind of diet she has to be on.

Anyone who has gone through it can you please tell me what she can and can't eat. I know she can't have carbonated beverages any more.

Thanks

I had the surgery 4 months ago. A nutritionist will meet with her in the hospital or a few weeks prior to the surgery. usually, she will recieve a booklet that states what she can eat at each stage in her recovery. Usually she will start with clear liquids....Sugar free popsicles, clear broth, crystal lite, that type of thing. The next stage is full liquids....SF instant breakfast, bean soups, protein shakes, SF pudding,. Next comes eggs, beans, cottage cheese, smooth proteins that can be pureed in a blender.

In the beginning she will need to eat nothing but protein. Most doctors recommend 65-75 grams of protein a day and 60 oz of fluids. Both are really important. I didn't eat enough and now I am losing all my hair and eyelashes. It will grow back, but I need to be better at getting all my protein.

She will also need to exercise. Walking is very important the day after her surgery. She will need to walk the halls to work out the CO2 that has collected in her body from the surgery. She doesn't need to start a marathon, but walking will also help with any depression she may get afterwards. Also, tell her to take something with her to the hospital for when she gets her period. The sudden loss of fat releases a whole bunch of hormones stored there, and she will probably get it right away. TMI?

Wish her good luck. She will need your support in the beginning, maybe. Also, I belong to an online Yahoo support group called Weight Loss Surgery Support and Friendship. The people on the group are very informative and caring and love to share their own experiences, if she has any additional question.

She will not be able to eat much, Make sure she gets some really good protein shakes. She will need a lot of protein.
