Gastric Bypass & Hypoparathyroidism? |
I am scheduled for a gastric bypass on the 22nd of this month. One caveat: I have surgically induced hypoparathyroidism as a result of thyroid CA treatment 6 years ago. My bariatric physician feels this should not be of concern because my calcium levels are well controlled with 1000 mg CA+ daily along with 0.25 mcg of calcitriol daily and 50,000 IU of Vit D 3x week. (The procedure scheduled is a Roux en Y type) First of All Hypothyroidism and hypoparathyroidism are not the same thing not even remotely related. My hypoparathyroidism was also surgically induced when my throid was taken out. As Long as you show no signs of Tetany and your calcium levels are normal, I would think you will be fine. But be warned if your calcium levels drop you know what can happen so I would talk this over with several physicians before you do this. Knowing the number of people who have serious, even deadly, complications from gastric bypass, I ask: WHY are you doing that to yourself? I'm not a professional. However I had GB R&Y surgery with hyperthyroidism like you. I'm 12 yrs post surgery and have kept all my weight off (100 lbs). I have had no complications due to thyroid problems (I take synthroid .2 daily). I have had my boughts with vitamin defficiency a couple of times but that was because I wouldn't take them! They can make you very nausiated. If you do what your doc says you should be fine. I would imagine you will have to take something on the line of a prenatale vitamin with an extra kick to stay stronge. The first year is the hardest. Your body goes through so much! You might loose some of your hair from vitamin problems if you don't take care of yourself and I know you don't want that! I really hope you do well! It's a "big" surgery and most people don't understand what we have to go through. It's not a quick fix! It's not plastic surgery! I will tell you that my only serious complication has been throwing up. When I eat to much, to fast I feel like I need to vomit so sometimes (less now than before) I'll make myself to relieve that terrible feeling. It's a bad habit to get into but I still do it about once a month because I eat to fast or get something stuck (like steak, grilled chicken). Best of luck and God bless! http://groups.msn.com/GastricBypassinSou... Calcium malabsorption is one of the problems with the bypass. Please seek a second opinion before getting this procedure! |
