Gastric Bypass or Lap Band?

Gastric Bypass is pretty much out of my mind right now and Lap band seems to be the best route to go. But anyways now my question is for the ones who have had it done or are a doctor and can give me an answer, How long does it take to recover from the Lap Band surgery? and What exactly are you allowed to have and Not allowed to have after the Lap Band is placed?

I would agree with you that Lap band surgery is the better route to take as it does have many advantages over gastric bypass surgery, including a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time.

Recovery as pertains to activity can be fairly quick, but it also depends on the activity. It is important to avoid strenuous exercise, especially activities that use ab muscles, for 4 to 6 weeks so your band doesn't slip. But walking for exercise should be started soon after surgery, about 3 -7 days post surgery depending on how you feel. Start out slowly with your levels of walking, exercise, and other activities and gradually increase over the weeks, but you should be able to be at full activity levels by 6 - 8 weeks. As far as work is concerned, people with "desk" jobs can often go back to work within a week.

Foods to eat include: low-fat proteins (skinless poultry, fish, eggs), non-fat or low-fat dairy products, fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals.

Foods to avoid include: sugary and fatty foods, breads, fibrous foods, fried foods, whole fat milk, alcohol and carbonated drinks.

As far as diet choices are concerned, both the foods you eat and how you eat will change. It is very important to drink 48-64 ounces of water a day, but not at meals. The lap band works with solid foods so you should not have liquids with your meals. For the first couple weeks you will be on a liquid diet, the next couple weeks will be pureed foods, then solid foods at 4 - 8 weeks, depending on how you are healing. Plan on eating three small meals a day, and no snacking between meals. When eating, chew your food slowly and thoroughly.

Exercise is best. If that doesn't work I don't suggest going under the knife.

Weight loss surgery-like lap band surgery have become very common and very safe now. My cousin got her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery in India. She has lost more than 65 lbs in 5 months and is very happy with the results. The price for obesity surgery is very less in India. My cousin just paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America. She got her surgery from a company called Forerunners Healthcare.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines. I have read a lot of their patient stories also. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as Bariatric surgery and weight loss surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that your Obesity surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

Def go for the lap band as it it a much simpler procedure and like EVERY surgery there are risks and should you have any complications in the future with the lap band(reversible) you can always continue with the Bypass(non reversible).

Everyone is different after surgery and by experience I would definitely take 2 weeks off to heal. Its suggested after surgery liquids and soft mushy foods for 2-4 weeks then onto solids. It all depends on your doctor as they all do things differently.

Its then a matter or trial and error once you get used to having the lap band. Many people can eat bread and ALOT more cant. It all depends on the individual. Other foods to look out for that may not be easy to eat is steak, stringy veg (lettuce) and fruit (mangoes, peaches), raw fruit like apples and pears (stewing time!).

Its an individual thing and really until you live with it yourself other peoples experiences can only be a guide line.

You wont know yourself once its all said and done. Time to enjoy your life!!!
