Ganglion Cyst Pain...?

I've had a large ganglion cyst on my left wrist since October last year. I've accidentally hit my wrist on something, and obviously there was a little discomfort. Today all of a sudden, it's been painful, with periods of fairly sharp pains shooting to it.

I don't know if size would have anything to do with it, but the diameter of it is just a little bit smaller than a nickel if not the same size as a nickel. I went to the doctor to have it checked (the hand doctor??) and he said they can't drain it becuase it's too big. Is there any reason that you may know of for this pain?

I also have limited mobility in my left hand, only about 30 degrees up, while my right hand can go about 65 (yeah I took the protractor out)

Your ganglionic cyst may be compressing the nerves in the area, causing this pain. You may have bumped it again, or it may have enlarged. I'm not sure if your cyst involves a joint capsule or a tendon sheath, so I can only offer my personal observation.

I had a ganglionic cyst on the tendon sheath of my middle finger. The cyst was marble-sized and painless, but awkward as I could not adduct (move toward the palm) my middle finger. I consulted a cosmetic surgeon, who removed the cyst under conscious sedation (my sedation, not his!) using Versed and Valium. The wound healed in about 2 weeks and the cyst did not return.

You may want to return to your physician for evaluation, as it's obvious this cyst won't go away and as you've developed new symptoms (pain). Pain is your body's way of saying, "Hey! There's something wrong!" Even if the physician has stated he/she doesn't want to drain it, he/she may want to re-evaluate it with your new symptoms.

Good luck!

Thee only thing I can recommend is going to your orthopedic doctor and have him do the surgery. I had my surgery back in 2002 and have not hand in pain or a reoccurance of any.
I do have a nasty scar, but that scar is far more better than to tolerate the pain for another day.

No surgery? Rest, elevate your wrist slightly at or slightly above heart level.
Tylenol or 800mg Motrin work great too

Ganglion Cyst, do not go away, they usually get worse. See another doctor. The bigger it gets the harder it is to remove.
