Worried about wrist surgery for ganglion cyst tomorrow - Words of wisdom?

I am having surgery tomorrow to remove a ganglion cyst from my wrist and I am feeling very nervous and anxious about the procedure. I know that I will have a cast because bone is involved but I am most worried about the pre-op and the waiting before hand. I will have local anesthesia and they said I would be sedated to relax - Anyone gone through this? How long will I be 'out of it?' I just need some calming words of wisdom to help me relax this evening -

I have had the same surgery, only my cyst was at the base of my finger. I can definitely tell you that this is a VERY mild surgery and it's no big deal in terms of healing. The injection for the local anesthesia stung a little, but no worse than any other shot. The local anesthesia wore off for me within 45 minutes, and the general anesthesia (sedation) wore off within an hour and I was up and moving again. There was a tiny incision in my hand, which only took about a week and a half to heal and bruised a little bit within the first few days, but did not cause me much pain. Let's put it this way- I had the surgery on my right hand and then drove myself home from the doctor's office (once the anesthesia had worn off, of course), and my car is a manual (stick-shift)...it didn't hurt me one bit. Of course, everyone's body is different, and it may take a bit longer for your anesthesia to wear off or for your incision to heal, but don't worry about this...having the cyst there untreated is far more painful and annoying than having the surgery itself. I hope it works for you as well as it did for me!

i'am having surgery in march for a cyst on my hand, an i was wondering has anyone had spasm or your hand get worse, im worried about this, i need my hand, i have already had surgery before to remove a cyst from my ovary an they had to remove most of that. Report It

Its okay hon, relax. it will be alright!

Piece of pie ... you'll only be "out of it" long enough for them to get it all out. Depends on the size of the cyst, location, etc. If you are not relaxed, tell them - they'll gladly up the meds. Should be painless and certainly pain free after that darn thing is out. I've had two. One on my leg, one on my side. The side one was the worst cuz I'm ticklish. If you're that upset about it, call the surgeons office and ask for a small script of Diazepam. Just ask for the smallest prescription they'll write.

It's not bad at all. The worst part was that I had to keep it fairly still without bending it for six weeks. And I had to type, but I had to be careful that I didn't disrupt the stitches. Mine didn't involve the bone, but I can't imagine that you'll have much pain. And the nurses and everybody are so supportive. Good luck! You'll sail through it!
