HELP! Will a ganglion cyst on my wrist go away by itself? or is it necessary to have it removed?

I have one on my tendon and it kind of hurts but i was hoping it would just go away with time.. will it?

I just recently had one removed. My doctor gave me three options 1.Throw a book on it and bust it open
2. Drain it and shoot cortisone in it
3. Have it surgically removed
He said there is a 50/50 chance with the draining that it would come back and and a 95%chance with the removal that it won't come back. Usually if it hurts alot you will need to have something done to it.

they usually have to be taken out

Sometimes they do eventually go away on their own. I've heard of people wacking them with a book, seriously, to break them. Your best bet is to see a doctor as I'm sure size and exact location make a difference in threatment.

My sister has one on her wrist too and she went to the doctor for it. They told her that they can take it out, but they can't promise that it won't grow back. So, I'd only get it removed if it is bothering you, otherwise you'll be spending money left and right getting it removed all the time.
I have also heard that back in the day they did smash it with a book, but I don't think I could handle doing that to myself! lol

Bree,

I have the same problem. I went to a surgeon and he aspirated it twice and it came back. The third time I went in, I did all the paperwork to have surgery.

Two days before the surgery it disappeared. Guess what--it is now back. The surgeon said that even with the surgery--which can be risky--it may still come back.

After the surgery, I would have to go through weeks of physical therapy, and may lose some hand movement. Right now--I am just tired of messing with it and pray it will go away.

If yours is hurting you should see a doctor. He or she will be your best source. Hopefully, you will have better luck than I did..

Quite frequently they go away with no treatment. Surgery should really be a last resort for cases where there is a significant amount of physical or psychological pain involved. Otherwise, it really isn't worth the trauma and rehab that goes along with surgery.
