I have a family member with a bad gambling addiction has anybody heard if hypnotherapy has helped modify these

I checked Wikipedia for information on the efficacy of hypnotherapy for addictions, and it doesn't say too much, mainly that most that studies show mixed results. So, it might be worth a try.

And while I know that you didn't ask about this, I hope you don't mind if I give you an opinion.

Addicts usually have a lot more going on with them than just the additive behavior. There's a long list of possible causes of compulsive gambling, and they are usually related to an underlying emotional problem. I'm not sure that there is a quick fix for it, including hypnotherapy.

While hypnotherapy might curb the urge to gamble for while, it doesn't address those underlying causes, teach coping skills, or offer a support system the way Gamblers Anonymous or psychotherapy does. I don't know if this family member is close to you, but if so, you might want to check out gam-anon, or talk to an addiction specialist to find out the best way to help him.
