Have you known a person who has admitted a problem with drinking/drugging/gambling/ove...

If so, have they been helped more by a group such as AA/NA/GA/OEA or by private or group therapy? Or both?

I ask because AA and similiar groups of "regular" people do not allow those recovering any substitute to pull them through. In therapy, there is sometimes the option of medicine to help withdrawal symptoms.

I knew a woman who, along with her husband, quit drinking, the AA way. The woman was shaking, stuttering, an all around mess (and after being off the stuff for one year). I think that some people do need to work with psychiatrists, counselors, etc. - even if also in a program such as AA.

Private help is probably better, followed up by some type of weekly meeting. Most people think the 12 step programs are kinda bogus.

Try the Samaritans.

My mother stopped through AA. She had tried a billion different ways and that was the only one that kept her sober the longest.
