Can accutane cause gallstones?

Since accutane can raise cholesterol, and it causes gallstones, can accutane cause gallstones?

It is not likely to. Accutane raises the level of cholesterol in your SERUM, not in your entire body. The cause of cholesterol gallstones is NOT elevated serum cholesterol, but a tendency for bile to sludge and sit in the gall bladder. The only people sounding an alarm about accutane and gallstones seem to be ambulance chasers, the FDA has no data to support an association.

Also, gallsones take a fairly long time to form. Youre not likely to be taking Accutane that long.

God knows accutane seems to have enough adverse events associated already (psudotumor cerebri, osteoporosis, liverinjury, anaphylaxis, vasculitis, birth defects, aggression, psychosis, depression, suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, hearing problems, cataracts, short stature, neutropenia, rhabdomyolysis, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, thrombosis, stroke, seizures). But gallstones doesnt seem to be one of them.

My son took Accutane, three times, and no gallstones.

I believe it does because I was on Accutane three times starting at the age of 15 and ending at 21. I had to have my gallbladder removed at the age of 23 because I had so many gallstones that blocked food from passing. I also believe the interaction with birth control created more calcium deposits.
