Why does my stomach hurt after I eat Popcorn?

I have a horrible stomach and no Dr. has really been able to tell me why my stomach acts up so much. My last diagnosis was acid reflux disease and I was proscribed some meds for that. It seems to help some, but EVERYTIME I eat popcorn I have a horrible stomach ache, and especially after I eat anything spicy or red meats. Its a dull pain right under my breastbone. I also have nausea. Could I have IBS or gallbladder problems? I am sick of being sick...someone help cause the Drs. sure arent!!!

The popcorn will make your stomach problems worse. You shouldn't be eating anything with seeds, period. Your Doctor should have given you a good diet to follow so that you don't have to keep taking the medications & so that you won't be sick all the time. When you have a sensitive stomach, you cannot eat spicy foods, not even pepper! You should not have any seeds whatsoever & nuts are a no-no unless they are raw & well-chewed. You need easily digestible foods that break down easily in your stomach so that you don't end up with a damaged stomach lining & that nasty taste in your mouth/esophogus. NO fried foods. NO coffee, tea or soft drinks. ONLY HERBAL TEAS. Use honey instead of sugar. Lots of fresh fruits & veggies, raw or lightly steamed. Rice is great for your stomach. STAY AWAY FROM HARD TO DIGEST FOODS like Peanut Butter, Red Meat, Heavy cream & whole dairy products. Go for low fat & non-fat. Eat your eggs poached in water or hard boiled. Throw out the yolk, as it is fatty & hard to digest! Watch out for white breads, mustards, mayonaise & ketchups. Stay away from processed lunch meats & hot dogs. It isn't easy, but you CAN heal your stomach & eat without the pain & without the medications. Your Doctor should have told you this.

Thanks 4 your votes! Whoever you are! Report It

stop eating it.

popcorn is hard to digest, stop eating it.

All those things are probably seasoned with salt. Also, they have high levels of protein. Maybe your digestive system has a problem breaking down either one of those things.

The oil or acid in the foods may be the problem. Popcorn is popped in oil, and then usually drenched in butter. Cut certain foods out of your diet and see if you still have the problem.

I had diverticulitis and it was like that. There was a place on my stomach that hurt when it was pressed on.

Diverticulitis is an infection in pockets in your stomach.

Not saying that is your problem but it is something to ask about.

Popcorn is esentially a seed, and therefore can get stuck when going through you intestinal tract. I don't think this means that you have a major problem that would need a diagnosis or medication. Probably just means that you shouldn't eat popcorn. I also have this problem, so I stay away from it. It comes down to there being somethings that you just should not eat.

Chew it up better.

If that doesn't work then stop eating eat.

Yes, it could be gallbladder. Does the pain radiate or move around to your back at all? Another cause could be what is known as Diverticulosis. Its a condition where roughage and spicy foods collect and form small sacs on your intestine. See a Gastroenterologist for the low down, some general practitioners just aren't worth their salt.
The only thing to do for Diverticulosis is diet modification, sorry.

Dear JDlaisy
Yor problem souns like a very common one, If the trigger for the pain or discomfort is not only the popcorn, but also spicy food and others, there is a sequence or "algorhythm" to follw, in order to diagnose the cause.
The first, is the X rays of the upper portion of the GI tract, swallowing 120 ml of barium sulphate solution,. in order to visualize the structurs that may be producing pain (lower esophagus, stomach, and upper duodenum or first portion of small intestine), in order to detect any sign of ulcer, inflamation, lack of speed i stomach emptying and other factors.
If such test with x- rays doesnt tell much, we go into the second stage, which is endoscopy (looking yopu esophagus and stomach and duodenum), with a flexible tube or endoscopy, under quick sedation (takes 10-13 minutes)
The other test is done at the same time as endoscopy, and that is, to test the acid secretion of your stomach.
Before prescribing You ANYTHING. (sorry for shouting), the diagnosis must be very firm, the first step being the identification
of the organ or structure that is causing the discomfort.
If nothing is found in the previous studies, then a colecistography (visualization with x-rays of the gallbladder after taking some tablets in order to detect calculi,) will be the next step.
Yours very sincerely
