GERD and acid reflux? |
I have had GERD for 4 years, I dont take any meds right now....Just mylanta and tums when really bad....My question is why does it hurt so bad after a night of drinking? I was told not to drink but Im in my 20s and still want to "party"...What is in the alcohol that makes it hurt so bad the next day? Why does it produce more acid...It makes me throw up acid sometimes because there is so much....And I know I need to make an appointment with my doctor....Thanks...any advise on GERD would be helpful... GERD symptoms are usually worse after eating. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP...I GOT BACK ON PREVACID AND HAVE A DOC APPOINTMENT. Report It my mom has had GERD and acid reflux for the past 20 years and has only recently started taking medication. The acid in alcohol is what makes you feel pain and what not also avoid citrus and oddly enough tomatoes. Also my mom was told to sleep laying down but propped up with a pillow to avoid acid from coming up her stomach at night. If all else fails, the only medication that has ever worked for her was Nexium... you should ask your doctor about this medication...Hope that helped :] Alcohol is acidic and will cause damage to your stomach in excess. Also, GERD is a condition which yoor stomach produces more acid than normal. So, you've got a combination of excess stomach acid and alcohol that is basically eating away at the inner lining of your stomach and possibly your esophogus. Not good. Cut out the drinking for now or you'll end up with a bleeding ulcer (you can die quickly from this). Also, forget teh Mylanta. Go to the store and start taking Prilosec OTC everyday. Don't stop taking it until you see your doctor. If you prefer to "party" instead of watching your health, you'll be in for a rude awakening in the long run, dear. Actually Alcohol is very gengerous for our health. Think that there is a man or women drink milk or water a lot is it good for their health ? NO any think which you need but it's naturall that we take a lot means if we need small amount of alcohol in our body we take large amount and itz not good for our health in GERD you starts feel that but in normal life we can't feel. don't you feel lucky that you can feel those things very clearly then a normal man I know it's difficult but you are really lucky. I think that all the answers you've gotten so far are good so I'll just add that if you are going to drink, make sure to take a prilosec or a pepcid before you do and then try and drink plenty of fluids to help you reduce the outcome of the "party" effect. Take care and good luck!! The alcohol relaxes a muscles at the top of your stomach. That allows more acid to flow from your stomach up into your esophagus. That's why you get worse GERD when you drink and I bet the next day. You should try prilosec OTC. It will help it is a proton pump inhibitor that will make the stomach create less acid. I would recommend going to your doctor you may have other issues like an ulcer or some other things wrong with your esophagus. While it says you can only use prilosec OTC for 2 week it is safe to use for long term treatment of heartburn. The catch is going to your Dr. and making sure nothing else is wrong. There are cases where prolonged GERD can increase your risk of esophageal cancer. So I would go and maybe try to get put on some, Nexium or Protonix. Stay away from peppermint, tomatoes, greens and grease. these add to the GERD. you really need to get on something better than tums and mylanta. you /will need/ to see/ a gastroenternoligist/ for/ an endoscopy/why /are you/ not/ taking meds / DO NOT STOP /taking them/ its makes/gerd/ that much/ worse/i /cant answer/ the ?/ about/ the alcohol |
