Can my GERD cause a bad odor/taste that only I can detect? |
I have GERD and the usual GERD symptoms, along with a number of rarer symptoms my ENT and I seem to agree are caused by it, including occasional earaches and sinus aches, throat clearing, bitter taste in mouth, and an undescribable pungent odor only I can smell. Could the odor be HCl acid? HCl fumes? Esophageal scar tissue? It's the same odor all the time, so I don't think it's stomach contents. It definitely improves slightly with H2 Blockers and temporarily with antacids, but is usually on and off throughout the day, every day. Sinuses are clean, uninflamed, uninfected. I am in excellent health, despite GERD. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks. You may also have LPR (laryngeal pharyngeal reflux). The taste you're talking about is the stomach acid. The medications may not be controlling the GERD as well as you'd hoped. Your ENT may want to increase your Rx dosage. Or, you might get an upper GI or endioscopy to determine if it's worse then it was previously. There is also the option of surgery. |
