Home Remedy for GERD?

Help me. Ive been having a bad time dealing with this GERD. Already had this Endoscopy with my Dr. and she said its just GERD i also have hiatal hernia. But its nothing to worry about. What really bothers me, is this this.. i have difficulty breathing everyday for 1 year now. I had my Endoscopy 2 months ago, and it seems the medicine she is giving me isnt helping. I can really feel this pressure building up my chest. And when i can burp or fart.. i feel good again breathing, but it will just last for 2 minutes and this air would trap again in my stomach. I can feel in my upper abdomen the air that is trapped. What makes me so irritated, it will not go out if i wont forced myself to burp.
Help me, i really feel this air is causing me misery inside my stomach. Plus, my back is aching and this left hips too. But everytime i burp good i can feel that its connected in my back. You think there is a connection of this GERD with this pain i am experiencing at my back? Help please!

Wow! This sounds a lot like what I go through. I have been diagnosed with GERD now for about 20 years. I first tried prilosec but that did not work. I now take Prevacid 30mg once a day and it works great.

However, in my case the pain in my chest is not associated with the GERD but maybe another underlying cause which is an allergy to a milk protein called casein. It is found in everthing from dairy products to processed foods like Subway turkey or some other types of foods.

Try cutting out dairy completely for a week and specifically look to cut out foods with ingredients that contain casein, caseinate, calcium caseinate, etc.

Sleep with your head and upper body propped up. I use a reading pillow with some pillows arranged against it to keep me at an incline. Also, eat slowly, avoid certain foods, and try to eat at least 3 hours before you go to bed.

I'm not sure if I can suggest something of a "home remedy" for you, as most of the "natural" remedies that can be found have little or no research based evidence to support their use. However, I'm sure someone will try to respond with something in this forum.

I assume your doctor has given you medication in the class of a "proton pump inhibitor?" Common meds in this category are: Nexium, Protonix, Prevacid, Prilosec, and Aciphex. If you're already on one of these, you might want to consider the option of taking it twice daily for a one-week trial. This is something I do commonly with my patients, as the original dose MAY work for most, but SOME may need twice the amount. The other option is to CHANGE the medication you're on from one to another in the same class. The fact that you have ANY kind of hiatal hernia DOES predispose you to increased discomfort, no matter how minute it may be.

If you're prone to a lot of gas production, you might look at the foods that you eat. Typically, legumes (beans), fruits, and veggies can cause a great deal of gas production in the gut, thus increasing the intra-abdominal pressure that you're experiencing. In this case, modifying your diet to have less of some of these things may help. There may also be PARTICULAR foods that create more gas than others, so be on the lookout for those as well. Something over-the-counter you can try is "Bean-o" or even "Acidophilus" capsules. I have had patients use these with varying results, most often good, but nothing is a 'certain' cure either.

If you're a fast eater, then SLLLLLLOOOOOWWWW down! Eating too fast can often cause people to swallow too much air, thus increasing bloating. Straws are a real no-no too, as they will do the same thing. If you're overweight, that alone can cause a lot of trouble.

Just a few suggestions. I hope this helps you.

Best regards.

I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!

Three part answer information, what not to do, and what to do!

INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, or can be Hereditary

The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.

WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:

Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose

WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.

I would also look to putting Cinnamon in you diet, it has been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.

Ginger root can also help the digestion process.
