Help with gerd (acid reflux)!?

i have had acid reflux aka gerd for about three months went to my dr and got med! the med iz zantac the liquid kind. how come it dont work? what makes gerd go away?

i have been on the med for about two months the dr had it as 1 tps then 2 now its three

I know you have probably heard this but try to eat foods that are not acidic, stay away from tomatoes, spicy food, etc.

Also do not lay down for bed or nap within 2 hours of eating.

I have taken Zantac and it did not work as well as prevacid, which is also a prescription.

I used to have heartburn so bad I thought I had an ulcer. I saw 3 Dr's in a year, who each gave me a different prescription. After none of the meds worked, I went to a naturopath who told me to eat a pickle or tomato when the reflux was real bad. Whaddya know.....cured the reflux.
Now whenever I have heartburn, (maybe 2 x a month now instead of every day) I eat something acidic. Even an orange will work.
It's amazing, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and is natural besides!!!

Insist on a different medicine. You need to stay up after eating for twenty minute before going to bed. You should elevate your bed or try sleeping in a lounge chair when its really bad. avoid spicy foods and acidy or ones that make you gassy untill you feel a little better. Lose weight if you need to. Eat smaller meals to avoid over stressing the spinctor. I hope you feel better sooner, this is all i can remember

For acid reflux, or gird, get a prescription for Nexium, or Omeprazole.
Do not eat within 2 hours of bedtime, avoid tomatoe based foods, such as spaghetti, and most like Italian foods.
Any juices containing high levels of acid should also be ingested in small amounts.
In my case the most important step was to avoid laying down within two hours of eating, plus avoiding Italian foods
For some strange reason, Pizza didn't seem the cause any problems.
Good luck!

Lifestyle Changes
Medical treatment is not the only option for managing GERD symptoms. Changes in diet, nutrition, and routines can be used alone, or combined with a medical treatment, to gain relief from the pain associated with GERD.8

The following lifestyle changes have been shown to have a positive effect on symptoms associated with GERD in some patients:

Losing weight
Quitting smoking
Wearing loose-fitting clothing
Eating smaller meals
Raising the head of the bed when sleeping
Waiting at least 3 hours before lying down after eating4
Avoiding certain foods and drinks,4,8 including:
Chocolate
Peppermint
Alcoholic drinks
Caffeinated beverages
Citrus drinks
Tomato-based foods
High fat and/or fried foods

I have had acid reflux for a couple years. Zantac did nothing at all for me. I was also on stuff like Previcid, Prilosec, Nexium, etc.. the only thing that works on me is Aciphex. In fact, either Previcid or Prilosec made me significantly worse in 4 or 5 days.
(some of those medicine spellings may be off a little - haven't been on them for a while)

It may just be that the medicine you are on is not working with your body chemistry. If it doesn't help, tell your doctor you want something different that DOES work.

Believe me, you want something that works before damage happens and you wind up with apnia and half the time you fall asleep, you get choked and JOLT back awake!

I take one Prilosec everyday. It works wonder for Acid reflux and indigestion.

My husbands had acid reflux going on about 15 years now and the only thing that helps him is prilosec and the chewable rolaids, but u must eat 1 pill every day for it to work it will coat your stomach ,no more spicy foods!!,acid reflux will eat the lining of your stomach and if it gets worse and taken care of properly u will throw up all the time and then goes your teeth , and u will have diarea every day no joke!! nothing to play with What causes GERD?
No one knows why people get GERD. A hiatal hernia may contribute. A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach is above the diaphragm, the muscle wall that separates the stomach from the chest. The diaphragm helps the LES keep acid from coming up into the esophagus. When a hiatal hernia is present, it is easier for the acid to come up. In this way, a hiatal hernia can cause reflux. A hiatal hernia can happen in people of any age; many otherwise healthy people over 50 have a small one.

Other factors that may contribute to GERD include

alcohol use
overweight
pregnancy
smoking
Also, certain foods can be associated with reflux events, including

citrus fruits
chocolate
drinks with caffeine
fatty and fried foods
garlic and onions
mint flavorings
spicy foods
tomato-based foods, like spaghetti sauce, chili, and pizza
u have to start eating right and take care of your self my husband every day goes threw this and it hurts
take care god bless...

This works....
