Gerd, this sucks?

been diagnosed with gerd. dont like side effects of perscription meds. any home remedys out there that work. antacids dont work so well. feels like someone standing on my chest an chokeing me. get the heartburn too but not all the time. also can anxiety be a factor in this. i also try to watch what i eat.

You didn't say what medicine you're taking, but there are numerous GERD medications available. Talk to your doctor. If one doesn't work for you (for whatever reason), another one may. You definitely want to keep the GERD under control, though.

Stress and diet are certainly factors. Avoid spicy or acidic foods, tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine, and elevating the head of your bed will help also. But talk to your doctor. He can change your prescription until you find a medication that doesn't bother you.

Be sure to keep the head of your bed raised up at night. Put the head up on blocks if you need to. Also consult your doc to be sure your don't have a hiatal hernia causing some of your problems as they can do surgery on that.

Basically you need more of an alkaline diet. Processed foods, diet cokes and all the fast food stuff are very acidic to your body and so you must avoid them. Alkaline foods are things like vegetables and fruits; in short, more of the healthy food.

Gerd symptoms can be controlled with a change in eating and lifestyle habits. Also, try to relax yourself more. Stress and tension can worsen your symptoms.

This book talks alot about GERD, and nutritional approaches, foods to avoid, supplements recommended and such. The author Brenda Watson also formulates products for Renew Life, a digestive care company with products to treat almost anything.

However they don't directly recommend those products. You can use the info in the book to decide whats right for you and buy it elsewhere or you can buy their products that will supply almost everything recommended in 2 or 3 formulas. I completely trust a company that will tell you the different things you need and why. Without directly saying "BUY THIS!"

Not sure if this will be of much help, but I did a single subject design experiment on myself for a class relating to this. I used to get heartburn very regularly (4-5 times a week) at night when I would be going to bed.

I decided to monitor what happened if I quit drinking soda. I simply measured how many Tums I took for a few weeks while drinking soda and then compared it to a month when I drank no soda. To my surprise about a week after I quit drinking soda I did not take another Tums for the next three weeks.

I was so amazed by the results that I quit drinking soda altogether except for occasionally at a restaurant or someone's house.

I can only say it had a huge affect on my heartburn and if you drink a lot of soda give it a try. I still drink coffee and beer and other things that are bad for gerd, but rarely ever take a Tums.

Oh yeah one last thing, my ex used to take Protonix and she made me take one once and I got that pressure in my throat and chest that you described.

鈥淐hronic GERD has the potential to scar and damage the lining of the esophagus. It can also lead to a condition called Barrett鈥檚 esophagus, which carries the risk of developing esophageal cancer鈥?(Rubin, 2003). "

You may want to try Japanese Plum. - UME, I use to have indigestion problem with lots of gas in the stomach and now I took UME everyday and I felt much much better.

The Japanese are a nation renowned for longevity, low cancer rate and excellent skin complexion. Part of the reason lies in their regular diet of Japanese plum.

As a popular if not indispensable food, plum is taken after every meal to aid in digestion and improve assimilation of nutrients as well as to promote general health and vitality.

Crowned as "the Blue Diamond of Fruits", Ume (Japanese plum) is indispensable in every Japanese household. It is a cure-all remedy traditionally used for over 100 illnesses:

鈥?Eases digestive problems - gastric and abdominal pain, indigestion, excessive gas
鈥?Alleviates constipation and bloatedness
鈥?Relieves food poisoning - diarrhoea and vomiting
鈥?Reduces "heatiness" or indigestion caused by over-consumption of durians, rambutans, jackfruits, and fried and spicy foods
鈥?Protects the liver and reduces the negative effects of alcohol consumption

Another solution is Enzymes.

Gas, bloating, nausea, body aches, etc. may be attributed to poor digestion. These may be clues that you are already enzyme-deficient, symptoms are varied and often subtle. Adding supplemental enzymes to your diet can also protect you from the discomfort of indigestion.

Camomile tea. Scullcap tea and also Ginseng tea. If the teas don't help try the pill form but try the teas first!
