Can eating Chicken onset GERD (Acid Reflux)?

I went Vegan for 2 months then I noticed I was frying all my foods and not eating correctly giving me GERD. I'm starting to eat meat again as I know I need it in my diet. I ate 2 roasted thighs this morning and then a couple hours later at work I had a major excruciating episode of GERD. I was grabbing my chest at my desk and i had to run out of work, I went to the ER and then before I went into the building it went away. How can I stop the episode from happening when it starts? I really didn't want to leave work. I have been struggling with this for 2 months I am 24 years young. I cut out fried foods completey, anything greasy, and I don't eat sweet, drink caffeine, or anything acidic. I need help. I can't see a doctor til December becauset that's when my health kicks in. I need help.

Orange juice, peppermint, chocolate, nuts, tomato, anything citrus can also cause this. Eat smaller meals more often. Don't lay down after a meal for 3 - 4 hours after. There are over the counter stuff you can buy for this. Find one that works for you, remember most of them take a day to work.

when you get the feeling, take a Tums and try to burp.

Not sure if it's the chicken as much as the roasting "flavor". That's what gets me. Also, eating too fast will get you every time. Try Pepsid AC - chewables. They really work for me. Good luck.

Maybe the chicken thighs are too greasy. Try boneless breast meat.

Avoid salts and strong spices. And avoid dairy products.

I had the same thing for years, and I had to adjust my diet a few times to finally get it under control.

Hang in there until your health insurance kicks in, then get to your regular doctor and if necessary a gastroenterologist.

Good luck.

I guess anything could cause it to start. Try drinking milk with your meals. I would suggest getting a 14 day course of Prilosec from the pharmacy (not a prescription). I got a problem with heartburn every night and I felt like my esophagus was just perpetually burned. It seemed like that gave it time to heal. I hope you feel better! Try sticking with white meat chicken instead of dark meat (thighs) for now. Dark meat has more fat in it.

Anything can precipitate GERD, but in your case I will guess it may be the oil. You can be given a prescription for antacids/ proton pump inhibitors. If those dont work, a Nissen fundoplication is a surgical procedure for that problem. Less radical means would be: stop smoking, stay away from alcohol, no meals at least 2h before going to bed .

It helps to know what bothers you. Foods with fat in them stay in your stomach longer. While they are there, more and more acid is formed.

While the ads on TV try to convince you that GERD is the worst disease in the world, they are only telling you that to sell pills. And the pills are expensive. So go into your drugstore and buy some Pepcid (generic famotidine--cheaper), and the antacid of your choice. The Pepcid keeps acid from forming in your stomach in the first place. The antacid will neutralize the acid once it gets there. If you should have another attack in spite of the Pepcid, take an antacid or two or three and wash it down with water to get the acid out of your esophagus. Neat thing about antacids--they are the fastest-acting drug out there. Works in seconds.

I have problems with heartburn (that is the old name for GERD), and I eat what I feel like eating. Once you figure out what foods do what to you and how to handle it, you can, too.

Good luck.

Anything and everything can cause GERD.
Gerd is basically the erosion of the barrier between the esophagus and the stomach.
The most common things that do this are alcohol, smoking, excessive vitamin C, sodas, greasy foods, and spicy foods, etc.
Ways to get relief are to sleep on your side or sleep elevated. You can get prescriptions for this and try otc meds. like Rolaids and other antacids...
If the answers given aren't enough, your best bet is to just do some research on the internet.
