Question about GERD? |
I have some GERD problems and yesterday I had some difficulty swallowing and I'm scared I have a esophagael stricture (worst case scenario). But I'm also on the birth control pill and I was wondering if having this would affect the way my pill was absorbed, since the esophagus narrows if I had a stricture? My father suffers from esophageal stricture and he never had a problem breathing. He got his from taking Nexium, and I believe that is a side effect. His difficulty wasn't swallowing, but that the food wasn't easily going down the esophagus. I doubt it has any effect on the BCP. If I were you, I would go on a bland diet for about 2-3 days. Eliminate caffeine, cola, coffee, chocolate, acidic foods, spicey foods, anything you know that worsenes your GERD. Give your stomach and throat a chance to calm down and heal. Then introduce the foods slowly back. It may be that you just had an acid attack that irritated the throat/esophagus and it needs some time to heal. I have had that acid burning and it did irritate my swallowing. If it doesn't improve, or it worsens, definitely check with your doctor. To relieve the GERD look at your diet - what you eat and how much and change it piece by piece. If you drink coffee, stop.(or water it down 50% and have only half a cup) Peanutbutter sandwich-stop or reduced 50%. Strawberries-stop. Drink more water. Drink milk. |
