Is pain a symptom of toenail fungal infections? |
My two big toenails have been a yellowish color since last summer. I figured it was probably from using an old nail polish. Then about a month ago, I woke up and my left big toe was very painful to touch. I blamed it on the pointy dress shoes I had been wearing the day before (but never had any problems with previously). One week later, I still felt a lot of pain around the base and sides of my toenail with swelling also present. I went to a podiatrist and he diagnosed it as a fungal infection.- cleaned around the nail and prescribed an antibiotic. Now it's 1 month later, my toe is still very painful to touch, still swollen at the base of the nail, and has not grown at all in almost 2 months. The Dr. said the only thing left to do is remove the nail to release the pressure and stop the pain. All of the other postings i've read about nail fungal infections do not list pain as a symptom. Is there any other possible diagnosis or treatments before I have the nail removed? You may have a bacterial infection under the skin...this is what happened to my left index finger ask the the doc for a stronger antibiotic and some ibuprofen (to reduce pain and swelling)....the antibiotic I was on was Tetracycline...my finger swelled to 3 x's it's normal size and I went to E.R. and they had NO idea what it was but gave me those meds and I didn't actually find out what caused it till my son was in hospital and his doc said it was a bacterial infection (from biting my nails) but if you have the fungal infection bacteria could have gotten in somehow and caused the pain and swelling....GOOD LUCK!!! its an ingrown toenail will not need to be remove just treated It sounds like it could be an ingrown toenail. If that's the case, it doesn't always require full removal of the nail. It depends how advanced it is. It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion. Are you seeing a podiatrist or just a general practitioner? Ask your doctor to prescribe LAMISILE. It's a pill that you take once daily for about 3-4 months, and it's expensive, but it works. |
