What types of fungal infections are Bone Marrow Transplant patients susceptable to and how are they caught?

Candidiasis or thrush is one. Can be diagnosed by seeing a white coating on the tongue. Candidiasis also causes vaginal yeast infections too. Aspergillus is another common fungal infection. Usually in the lungs. Can be diagnosed with sputum culture or sometimes it can be found in a blood culture that is checked for fungi.

Bone marrow recipients have many possible/probable side effects to be concerned with other than fungal infections.
Most are caused by the anti-rejection drugs that need to be taken.

Next time I talk to my brother I will ask him, but I suspect fungal infections are the same as for the whole populace

Most fungal infections are a side effect from antibiotics. Some in the form of yeast infections or thrush in the mouth (candidiasis). I had a friend that developed a lung fungal infection after a bone marrow transplant and he died from that. Remember that in order for the transplant to be done, the patient has to have enough chemotherapy to deplete his cell counts to 0. This leaves you wide open for any infection.
