Constant Sinus infections caused by a fungus.? |
Over 15 years I have had chronic sinus infections. I was told by a doctor that it was from a fungal infection. Unfortunately he didn't know how to treat a fungal infection. I have done some research myself and found the Mayo Clinic has been studying this problem but no treatment yet. Any suggestions? Another suggestion would be to contact your "state" university as they usually will have at least a small mycology department. Allow them to take a swabbing and see if they can culture the agent causing your infection. Mycology is still a very finicky science and I (after taking it as a grad level college course) would recommend trusting their immense knowledge about fungi over that of a doctor who only receives basic training in the subject. Also, fungi can be very difficult to identify specifically and mycologists are the only ones with this extent of training in the matter. Hopefully, if you can identify it better then you can come up with some treatment options with the doctor and mycologist together. Hope that helps! Fungi like a warm, moist environment, free of bacteria and a high Ph. So change the environment. Obviously, you want to keep the warm and moist, right? Avoid antibiotics if at all possible to avoid getting rid of the bacteria that keep the fungus under control (fungus stays in smaller numbers when normal flora are present). Vinegar (a tablespoon in a cup of warm water and about a fourth of a teaspoon of salt) will lower the Ph to a more acid environment to reduce the fungus but not kill the "good" bacteria. Flush your sinuses with this very gently as you would a saline flush. I'll bet the fungus begins to subside. You need to seek a second opinion regarding the treatment for a fungal infection. There are many anti-fungal medications that can be used, you just need to be sure it is the right drug for that particular fungus. An infectious disease Dr. or ENT Dr. would probably be your best bet. |
