Would tetracycline (the drug) be effective against a fungal infection?

i think some sources say that it's effective against protozoan infections.. i just wanted to make sure.. thanks

There may be some cases in which tetracyclines have an effect, but not in general, no. You'd usually want an antifungal drug, and for the infections someone might usually ask about on here, like yeast infections or nail infections those would probably be azole drugs or terbinafine. Those drugs would not include tetracycline, which would also not be a drug of choice for any protozoal infections I can think of at the moment, e.g. Giardia, Trichomonas, E. histolytica.

I would think so, but you should ALWAYS ask a doctor or a pharmacist before taking it for other reasons, especially if you have been off of it for a while or are currently taking new medications. Good luck!

No, tetracycline is for bacterial infections ONLY. If you take it you are just building up the fungal resistance to the drug and causing yourself to become even more susceptable to more fungal infections. It is called a superinfection and you really need a doctor to perscribe you the right med.

No, tetracycline is an antibiotic. It is used to combat bacterial infections. For a fungal infection you need an anti-fungal (Diflucan, Sporanox, Grisfulvin, Lamisil). So the tetracycline is powerless to defeat your nasty nasty fungus.
