Ok....so I got frostbite lol....now what?

I got a pretty good case of frostbite this evening walking my dogs (which is odd as I've been in MUCH colder weather then this before, oh well).

When I got home my legs started itching like mad, when I looked they were solid red......so being the genius I am lol....I started scratching & rubbing like mad....then they developed white welts the size of silver dollars, then the fire set in lol....and from there lots of pain.

I took a shower careful not to have the water too hot (warmed up gradually). The redness has gone away and most of the itching but its still tingling and slightly burning a few hrs later.

I don't think its bad enough to warrent medical treatment but is there anything else I should do or watch for? (aside from staying in out of the cold lol).

Thanks

If any blisters develop, do not break them. Seek medical attention if that occurs. Be careful not to get any temperature extremes for the next 24 hours ( to the frozen body parts). Other than that take some analgesics as needed (tylenol). Try to keep the area warm for the next few hours.

I would wrap them in a dressing or if you don't have that, a towel will suffice. It will serve a dual purpose as it helps to maintain insulation, as well as guarding them from any additional damage.

Hope that helps some!
Jeremy

frostbite warrants medical attention. go to an ER or urgent care NOW.

Sounds like you might have got a case of "flash frostbite". Where your skin appears to have similar characteristics of frostbite but actually the tissue is not dead. Itching the irritated area was not a good idea. Warming the area with water was. Keep the area clean, and like the EMT said, cover the area with a towel to keep it from rubbing on things. Take a few ibuprofen to help with any swelling that may occur, and see how it is in the morning. If there is any change of color of the tissue in the morning, go and see your doctor. Good luck.
