Can I get frostbite this way?

I work at a restraunt and they have one of those big ice despensers, the ice is cold enough to where that smokey stuff comes out of it. Now the scooper is a big metal thing and even though the restraunt said its "safe" to handle it with my bear hands, I just feel it is VERY cold to the touch, can I get frostbite this way or am I fine? Because my hands got kinda tingly. Thuogh I see no discoloration now.

Well unfortunately I work at a very small family owned restraunt and the boss is a real pain, no safety measures at all. :( What kind of gloves are appropriate?

You get frostbite when you've been exposed to the extreme cold for long periods of time (blizzard, trekking in mountainous regions, etc etc). If it's just an industrial ice dispenser, there shouldn't be a problem..assuming you don't work with it for hours and hours on end and never stop touching it ever. It's normal for your hands to feel tingly and maybe a bit painful from just a few minutes of holding, say, an ice pack from your refrigerator. If you're really that concerned about it, I'd recommend wearing mittens or gloves while you work, or taking occasional breaks to warm them up.

hope this helps
i think you can only get frostbite after being exposed to extreme cold for an extended period of time.
if you feel unsafe about getting the ice out then maybe talk to your manager and see if you can wear gloves to help get it out.

you can only get frost bite if you hold onto that scooper for like 30 minutes or more. otherwise your fine. but yeah bring gloves to wear

Well, you're better off wearing gloves or using the metal scooper thing, but if you're going to use your bare hands, make sure they aren't wet or even damp or sweaty. The ice might freeze to your skin if its cold enough and it's really unpleasant. If this happens, frost bite is a possibility but don't pull the ice off, put your hands in some cool water to melt it off.

Bottom line though, it's your employer's responsibility to keep you safe at work. Don't do anything that you feel is unsafe.
