Frostbite: Do I have it? |
I was playing street hockey for about an 1hr 1/2 (It is -10 degrees). I went in and noticed my legs felt really cold. I went in the shower and noticed slight bluness, so I put the warm/hot water on it and rubbed it. It went away(bluness) and its only been slightly red for an hour or so. I put on pants, and I am keeping it warm now without any rubbing(it does not burn that much any more). Is there anything wrong? You are going to be fine. Frostbite occurs when skin or deeper tissue actually freezes. The blueness you noticed, cyanosis, comes from a temporarily decreased blood supply. With prolonged cold exposure, your body clamps down smaller vessels to redirect blood to your core and keep your vital organs warm. The redness you now notice is called reperfusion hyperemia; a rush of blood has come back to your now warm toes. No permanent tissue loss will occur, although you may experience cold hypersensitivity in your toes for several months. maybe its frost nip it probablt will go away doutbtful.....otherwise youd feel extreme pain Frostbite would affect the small extremities first (toes and fingers). Its unlikely that its frostbite, but keep and eye on it if it does not improve then get it looked at by a doctor You don't have frostbite unless you skin starts to blister and it looks like it is black and ready to peel off. Generally, frostbite is accompanied with discoloration of the skin, along with burning and/or tingling sensations, partial or complete numbness, and possibly intense pain. If the nerves and blood vessels have been severely damaged, gangrene may follow, and amputation may eventually be required. If left untreated, frostbitten skin gradually darkens after a few hours. Skin destroyed by frostbite is completely black and looks loose and flayed, as if burnt. It's unlikely. If you had frostbite, it would have shown up in your extremities (ears, nose, cheeks, fingers, toes) first. You're just very cold! First of all the first aid treatment for frost bite it never rub the skin..if the skin is frozen it is ike it was burned and that tisue will slough off. Frostbite on skin looks, waxy, white, and or blue. There is little sensitivity to the skin. Do not run the skin under hot water, but lukewarm water is best. If your skin does not lok any better in a short time, you need to go to the ER. not really because if it were frostbite you would feel immense pain in your leg but what you have doesn't sound bad . if you had frostbite, you would be in agony... frostbite is extremely serious... I'm sure you are just cold... |
