Anyone every had stress fractures, if so how long does it usually take to reform the bone?

Recently discovered that I've developed stress fractures on my weight bearing joints due to osteoarthritis/previous injuries to those areas and breakdown of the cartlidge. it was said that the stress fractures were covering a moderate section of the articulating portions of the joint. was just wondering if anyone has every had stress fractures before and how long it took resting the joint and minimal weight bearing before the joints healed. Doc wasn't too specific with the time frame and that it could be a couple weeks to possibly a couple months

Stress fractures all depend on how much weight you put on them. You didn't specify where the bearing joints where but I am going to assume your legs. The best thing to do is take it easy. Water of course. See if your doctor can percribe any medicane to relieve it. Also do not stand for excessive ammounts of time. Hope everything goes better.

I've had stress fractures in my foot before, basically I took about a year off from sport, then began part time exercise and had regular scans to make sure the bone was not re-lapsing. After a few months of doing this I was ready to go....

My husband is in the military and about a year and a half ago he got stress fractures in both of his shin bones. Being the military they didn't really let him "heal" for very long. They gave him pain meds and all that. I think all in all it took about a month, maybe a little bit more for him to run and not have it be excruciatingly painful. Now his shins only hurt when it is really cold, other than that they don't bother him too much. But then again it depends on where and how severe the fractures are. Also the type pf pressure and activity that gets done to the area.

I had a stress fracture in the foot, it took MONTHS to heal. Getting the stress off was the key thing. I'm talking crutches for a metatarsal (sp)

It happened when I was in my 30s and walking on the beach, It was sore and persisted....didn't go away until I took weight off it and wore one of those ugly boots, ugh.

Good luck!

They normally start healing immeadiatly, until you cause the "stress again". So it could never heal. you need to rest it and give it several weeks, and up to 3 month for it to be stong enough for you to start adding pressure again on the injury. Eat lots of calcuim and magnesium in the meantime to help with the process.

I had a stress fracture in my shin last year. I was running track so I was putting a lot of stress on the bone. Basically I'd say it takes anywhere from about 1-3 months off of the activity that caused the injury. Took me almost 2 months of essentially no running (did other exercise) to get rid of the injury.
