Do finger fractures heal fast?

I broke my index finger about 3 weeks ago. The xray showed a diagonal break (kind of big) but now it feels almost 100%. And to think they wanted to put plates and screws in the fracture. All i did was put a splint and not move it. Do fingers heal that fast?

Hi there,

Unfortunately, your finger is probably undergoing your body's natural way of defending pain. A finger fracture, if it is severe, will usually need at least 2-3 months of recovery time, and that is just to secure an outside layer of bone. If you were to bump it the wrong way after this point in time, the fracture may still reoccur.

Your fracture sound mild to moderate. I would expect a two week recovery, with LIGHT work on the finger for at least 4-5 months post fracture.

Hope this helps.

lol, we broke my friends finger once and now it is 1 inch thick were it was brocken. lol it is the funniest thing! he hates us for it

I had a big toe with a fracture like that. I still have the toe. And the Dr treated it just as you did your finger. But I still can't bend it after 20 years. And fractures don't heal fast. when your Dr says you can go back to what you were doing because it's OK that does not mean that it is healed. It only means that there is a sign of bone growth. I also had a broken knuckle and the Dr said it would be fine without treatment. And he was right. It is now higher than the other knuckles. Doctors dont want to put plates and screws in because they think they should have been fitters and turners. Nor do they need the practice.
But congratulations.
